Wichita States Ends Up Behind 8 Ball

March 24, 2014 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: Gonzaga was a No. 8 seed and lost Sunday to No. 1 seed Arizona. Memphis was a No. 8 seed and lost Sunday to No. 1 seed Virginia. Any similarity between those No. 8 seeds and No. 8 seed Kentucky, which edged previously unbeaten Wichita State, is purely in the mind of the NCAA tournament selection committee. And the Kentucky-Louisville matchup in the round of 16 is purely coincidental, too, no?

* Wichita State played pretty much like a No. 1 seed. Solid team. Then again, so did Kentucky. If the Shockers’ game-ending three-point attempt goes in rather than miss, the tournament is much more interesting. Well, except perhaps to the folks who bleed Kentucky blue.

* Here’s a thought (or something approximating one): Stop giving coaches bonus for NCAA tournament victories. Instead give whatever bonus money the athletic department at these institutions of higher learning have set aside and give the compensation to players instead. No? OK, how about compensating these “student-athletes” financially for lost study time?

*Speaking of big-money college coaches, how about those molders of men who have million-dollar contracts (although feel free to pick a slightly lower figure if you’d like) losing early-round NCAA games should have the sum they would have received for winning withheld from their next paycheck. Something says that might make for more interesting postgame press conferences and shows of good sportsmanship.

* If it’s any consolation to Illinois basketball fans (and the guess here is that there might be a sliver of that), former coach Bill Self’s Kansas team was eliminated from the NCAA tourney by No. 10 seed Stanford on Sunday. Meaning the Illini still were playing basketball longer than Self. OK, so it was the National Invitation Tournament and Illinois lost Sunday night. But still …

* Whoever dreamed up the idea of starting the Major League Baseball season over the weekend in Australia apparently is not a college basketball fan. Might not even be a baseball fan. Hey, you want to play a couple of exhibition games in Australia, go right ahead. To compromise the integrity of the regular season (oh, wait, there isn’t much in the way of integrity in pro sports, is there?) is just plain uncalled for. On the bright (?) side, MLB didn’t have to worry about the game being snowed out. As if a Los Angeles Dodgers-Arizona Diamondbacks game would have needed to worry about something like that.

* Saw this Sunday night on Twitter from UberFacts: Sarcasm has been proven to make you smarter and more creative. Tempted to show that to The Wife, although there are concerns that the tweet actually might be sarcastic.
