White Sox Extend Streak With Thrill for Brazil

August 22, 2013 @ No Comments

The Chicago White Sox, who had the longest current winning streak of any major-league team going into Wednesday night’s game at Kansas City, defeated the Royals 5-2. Which means — if the statistical analysis department around here is to be believed — the Sox still have the longest current winning streak of any major-league team. Except now it is five games instead of four. And all the Sox need to reach .500 is 23 more consecutive victories.

A photo of Emanuela De Paula rather than a Sox pitcher? What a surprise..

* Starlin Castro batted leadoff and Anthony Rizzo second as manager Dale Sveum went to a new-look lineup. Rizzo responded by going 3-for-4, including two home runs. The Cubs responded with an old-look 11-6 loss to the Washington Nationals at Wrigley Field.

* Sox starter Andre Rienzo became the first Brazilian pitcher to win a big-league game. Which means Dayan Viciedo’s grand slam was the first by a Venezuelan player in a game in which a Brazilian pitcher won a big-league game. And a reminder: To finish with a winning season, the Sox (51-74) need to go 31-6.

* Speaking of Brazilians, this space did run a photo of model Adriana Lima in Wednesday’s (Aug. 21) effort. For that reason, the editorial staff around here decided to go with someone else. And not just anybody. In this case, it is model Emanuela De Paula. You’re welcome.

* The NFL fined Bears rookie linebacker Jon Bostic $21,000 for a hit on a pass play against the San Diego Chargers. Fellow linebacker Lance Briggs thought it was a legal hit. So did coach Marc Trestman. If the league really wants to send a message that it is cracking down, it ought to fine the teams, too. And then give the money to the player who was the recipient of the hit.

* Soeakig of football, Pro Football Hall of Famers Bob Griese and Marv Levy will bs the guess Thursday at noon Central time on Talkzone.com with the show’s co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris. The program will become available on podcast later in the day.
