Warriors Still Have Shot at Bulls’ 72-10 record

Random thoughts (or reasonable facsimiles thereof) while wondering whether Steve Kerr has any second thoughts about deciding to coach the Golden State Warriors rather than reunite with Phil Jackson and coach the New York Knicks (just kidding, folks):

* Speaking of former Bulls guard Kerr and his coach Jackson, the former three-point specialist has the Warriors with a 36-6 record, best in the NBA. The Knicks are 8-37, although they likely would have a better record than that with Kerr. At least 9-36, possibly even a double-digit victory total.

* Still speaking of Kerr and Jackson, both could be a part of history. More than they already are. The Warriors still have a shot at equaling the Bulls’ record season of 72-10 in 1995-96. Golden State’s .857 winning percentage projects to a 70-12 mark. The Warriors are 21-1 at home and 15-5 on the road. Let’s say they go 18-1 at home the rest of the way for 39-2. That means they would need to go 18-3 to finish 34-8 on the road. Doing that would tie the Bulls’ NBA mark. Not easy but not impossible. As rookie coach Kerr well knows, the key is to be playing at close to peak efficiency when the playoffs begin. It will be interesting to see how tantalizing equaling — or surpassing — that 72-10 record will be for Kerr and his players.

* Speaking of the history to be made with the Knicks, it has more to do with snow than with anything on a basketball court. The Knicks’ Monday night home game was postponed because the city basically had shut down for fears of the worst snowstorm in history. Or maybe U.S. history. Or maybe the worst snowstorm in the history of cable television. Or something like that. Something says if Kerr were in New York, he would at least have the common sense not to stand outside in the cold the way TV types do to tell their stories. Especially when the storm hasn’t really hit. Yeah, that sort of history few people want to be a part of. Well, at least until after it’s over. No fun being jeopardized by weather, even if it does make for great stories — provided that you survive the experience.

* Speaking of fun, there apparently are folks outside the northeastern part of the United States who were mocking the dire forecasts and the TV types chatting about them on the scene. Some of those mocking were from Chicago. Those folks might to take a look back at last winter and see how media (including some of them) handled the Midwest end-of-the-world weather before making fun of others. Just a thought.

* Still speaking of fun (and the Warriors), the Chicago Bulls likely will have little of it Tuesday night at Golden State. Nothing like playing down the possibility of a Bulls victory. Let’s see, the Bulls had 35 points in the first half of their loss Sunday at home against Miami. Golden State has a player — Klay Thompson — who had 37 points without missing a shot in one quarter last week. Yeah, this sounds like pretty much an even matchup, no?

* Speaking of Thompson, you can be fairly certain that coach Tom Thibodeau’s team won’t give up as many points (52) to Thompson as he had in that 37-point quarter contest. Of course, there’s always Stephen Curry to contend with, and it just might be his turn.

* Speaking of the Bulls, their road trip also includes a stop at Los Angeles to play the Lakers minus Kobe Bryant (injured and out for the season). at Phoenix, Houston, New Orleans and Orlando before their next home game Feb. 10 vs. Sacramento. Meaning the best part of the trip for most media will be accumulating frequent-flyer miles. And not having to worry about any snow. Until perhaps their return to Chicago.
