Vinny’s Clippers Advance in NBA Playoffs

May 14, 2012 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: OK, everyone (anyone????) who foresaw Vinny Del Negro having a longer playoff run this season as coach of the Los Angeles Clippers than the Bulls would have might want to think about opening up some sort of psychic hotline or something. Something says Bulls fans will have an easier time rooting for the former Bulls coach’s West Coast team than they will cheering on the Philadelphia 76ers (coached by another former Bulls mentor in Doug Collins), who outsted the Bulls.

Luvabulls rookie Kiley survuved the Bulls season better than some of the players.

* Is it too early in the season for the Chicago Cubs to begin playing spoiler? Even of a sweep of the two-game series that begins Monday (May 14) in St. Louis against the National League Central-leading Cardinals still leaves them in the back of the pack. Then again, the Cubs — who trail the Cards by six games — are 5-5 in their last 10, while St. Louis is 4-6. At that rate, it is merely a matter of time before the Cubs are atop the division. No?

* Speaking of teams that have gone 4-6 in their last 10 games, the Chicago White (16-19) Sox find themselves facing the Detroit Tigers (17-17) in a two-game series starting Monday night at U.S. Cellular Field. The Cleveland Indians (18-16) lead the division, which appears to be mediocre at best (although the Tigers are thought to have the ability to be an above-average team). If indeed the American League Central turns out to be a mediocre division, the Sox may be in luck. They appear to be able to be mediocre with the best of ‘em.

* There’s nothing quite like the unexceptional spring camp session after the draft for an NFL team. The Chicago Bears are no exception. They brought in players who might not take anyone’s breath away — with the possible exception of some breathlessness by a few media members. Then there’s a first look at some of the signed draft picks. What does it all mean? Not much to marvel at — other than the NFL’s ability to expand coverage so that it almost is 24/7, 364 days of the year.

* The NHL playoffs are going on. Like a lot of folks, my interest level is in inverse proportion to Chicago Blackhawk Patrick Kane’s sobriety level. Meaning, if recent reports are accurate, there’s the explanation for not being interested in whatever teams remain in the pursuit of the Stanley Cup.

Another day, another excuse to run some video featuring a member of the Chicago Luvabulls dance team. Hey, just because the Bulls didn’t advance to the second round of the NBA’s playoffs doesn’t mean the Luvabulls should vanish from the face of the Earth. Or from this site, for that. Today, we are happy to provide another video of a Luvabull. Say hello to Kiley, who has just finished her first season. To view her video, you can click here.

Char Numrych and Jonathan Snyder after their performance at "Circus of the Superstars 2012" at Elk Grove Gymnastics.

So how was your Friday night? Some of us ended up in Elk Grove Village for an annual fund-raising — as well as fun-raising — “Circus of the Superstars 2012″ at Elk Grove Gymnastics, a facility owned by Glen Marks, who also ran the evening’s festivities. The event featured youngsters, some of them Special Olympics participants, performing all sorts of acrobatic moves. Also featured were performances by Char Numrych, Brian Hampton and Jonathan Snyder on the trapeze and a dazzling effort by Jill Heyser on the silks (for the uninitiated, which includes your humble correspondent, that discipline involves something that resembles performing high up with bed sheets; no doubt it is far more complicated than that, but to those of us not in the know, that is pretty much what it looked like — only incredibly challenging to do).

Because of a malfunction (my brain rather than any camera equipment), there is no video of Jill performing. For that I apologize profusely to any and all who might have enjoyed viewing her performance (the group of disappointed persons definitely includes me). There is video of Char performing with Brian and Jonathan. Hope that eases some of the pain.

And thanks to the wonder of YouTube, there is video of Jill performing from a couple of years ago:
