Trading Places May Occur for Some Cubs, Sox Faces

July 14, 2013 @ No Comments

Although he allowed 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings, Matt Garza pitched well enough to post a victory in the Chicago Cubs’ 6-4 victory Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. Meaning he performed well enough to maintain interest from other teams contemplating trading for the right-hander. At this point it is unclear what is a more unlikely scenario: Garza remains a Cub for the rest of the season or the Cubs reach the postseason.

Lisa Marie Varon and Svengoolie (plus his rubber chicken, of course),

* Speaking of marketable commodities, Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano homered and doubled. He is 21-of-60 (.350) in that span with nine home runs and 19 runs batted in. Meaning he performed well enough to maintain interest from other teams contemplating trading for the veteran right-0handed hitter. At this point it is unclear what is a more unlikely scenario: Soriano remains a Cub for the rest of the season or he finishes the season with the Cubs and has more home runs thank walks (at this moment, he has 16 home runs and 12 bases on balls).

* If memory serves correctly (which occasionally it does), your humble correspondent could swear he heard a television type call pitcher Chris Sale and designated hitter/first baseman Paul Konerko as the only untouchable players on the White Sox. In that Konerko is batting .249 with seven home runs in 67 games and has been injured, he is closer to being untradeable than untouchable. And something says if anothe teams wants to bowl over Sox general manager Rich Hahn, Sale could be departing as part of a trade package that returns young talent to the Sox.

Svengoolie and Jill Thompson (plus his rubber chicken, of course).

* Speaking of top talent, it was great to be at The Squared Circle (2418 N. Ashland Ave., Chicago) to see Svengoolie make an appearance alongside wrestling’s Lisa Marie Varon (aka TNA’s Tara and formerly WWE’s Victoria). She owns and operates the restairant/bar with her husband/chef Lee. Among te friendly faces (and other body parts) attending were baseball historian/horror-movie enthusiast Brian Bernardoni, Redeye writer Elliott Serrano and comic-book wirter and illustrator Jill Thompson (known for her Scary Godmother series, among other works). For those who believe this mention serves merely as an excuse to run a photo of Svengoolie with the curly-haired redhead, let me remind you there need be no need for any justification as long as I an in control (or as in as much control as there usualy is around here). Anyway, an enthusiastic crowd enjoyed a fun time and had the rare opportunity to watch Svengoolie watch Svengoolie on TV (well, as well as pose for photos with him, win trivia-contest prizes and other fun stuff).
