Titanic Tennesse Effort vs. Bears? Not Exactly

November 5, 2012 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: The Chicago Bears beat the Tennessee Titans 51-20 Sunday in Nashville. The Titans are a bad team, as their record (1-7) and performance certainly indicate. Even so, the Bears (7-1) should receive credit for beating less-than-stellar teams. Not sure how much credit they receive for losing to what appears to be a fairly formidable foe in Green Bay.

Stephy C bares her feelings (and other things) about what team she favors.

* Speaking of good teams, the Bears face one Nov. 11 (that would be Sunday night) with the Houston Texans (7-1) visiting Soldier Field. Some view the game as a Super Bowl preview. Something says Bears fans gladly would face Houston in the Super Bowl — even if Jacksonville or Tennessee might be preferable opponents.

* In that the Bears do not have cheerleaders (and have not since the Honey Bears were disbanded after the Super Bowl championship season of 1985), would it be too much to ask to have the Texans cheerleaders along the sidelines at Soldier Field? They don’t even have to cheer or dance. Well, it was just a thought.

* So if the Bears allow three sacks against the Titans, shall we set the over/under vs. the Texans at 6.5? For the game — in case you thought that number might be for the first half.

* Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown vs. the Titans. It’s unclear which was more amazing — the way he finessed his way to the end zone or the fact that he did not need a massive dose of oxygen after his score.

* Safety Charles Tillman had four forced fumbles against Tennessee. Which is a testimony to his skill at punching the ball out of an opponent’s hands and also to the carelessness of the Titans.

* The math in the aftermath of a Bears game gets a little confusing to those of us who grasp of things statistical is minimal. Such incisive analysis certainly is exciting to some folks. Here is one number that adds up fairly clearly: With Lovie Smith as coach of the Bears, the team has won every time it has scored more points than the opponent. It doesn’t matter time of possession, turnovers, home or away, weather conditions or anything else. The Bears tend to win more often when they play better and lose more often when they don’t. No calculator necessary for that.

Speaking of Stephy C (OK, so maybe we weren’t, but we were looking at her photograph), here is video of the model:

Well, as long as we are going to have a cooking segment, how can we not include one of our favorites, lovely Lariyah Daniels? It’s amazing what she can do in the kitchen:

Comcast SportsNet Chicago will air a two-part documentary “From the Sports World to the Third World: A Journey to Cambodia” on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. and Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. The documentary features the efforts of Bulls/Blackhawks/Bears team photographer Bill Smith and Bulls senior director of ticket operations Joe O’Neil to save lives of hundreds of children in Cambodia.

CSN’s Chuck Garfien traveled to Cambodia in July to chronicle the story.

“The board of directors of ‘A New Day Cambodia’ is thrilled that Comcast SportsNet visited Cambodia to see our accomplishments,” O’Neil said. “The CSN crew was present as we marked our five-year anniversary since opening our first center. One hundred children who previously scavenged garbage 10-12 hours a day now attend school full-time, speak English and have opportunities that never previously existed. We are excited that Comcast SportsNet will tell our story to help our visibility and awareness.”

“This is the bottom of the food chain, can’t imagine worse conditions anywhere,” Smith says in the documentary. “I was told the life expectancy out here is 42, 43 years old. Over half the parents have TB, and a great percentage have HIV.”

Of his Cambodian experience, Garfien said, “Think of the worst poverty-stricken areas in the U.S., then multiply that by fifty. That’s where these children came from. But now, kids who once had no hope in life, now have realistic dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers, artists, political leaders and teachers.”

The 30-minute programs will be re-run on Nov. 18 (parts 1 and 2) at 7 p.m., Nov. 22 (parts 1 and 2) at 7 p.m., Nov. 29 (part 1) at 12:30 p.m., Nov. 30 (part 2) at 12:30 p.m., Dec. 24 (part 1) at 12:30 p.m. and Dec. 25 (part 2) at 10:30 p.m.).

Nancy To is hosting a worthwhile event Nov. 14.

Speaking of “Sports & Torts” co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris on Thursdays on talkzone.com … oh, we weren’t? Well, how about one of the lovely ladies who appeared on the program? OK, that works.

Nancy To, a recent “Sports & Torts” guest and the reigning Miss Illinois United States 2012, is hosting a “Be the Change” fall fashion event Nov. 15 at Crescendo (222 W. Ontario, Chicago). The gathering will benefit the Big Shoulders Fund that helps Chicago inner-city Catholic schools. The event begins at 7 p.m. with the first 100 guests receiving a “swag bag giveaway. There will be a cocktail hour before the 8:30 p.m. fashion show hosted by Nancy NBC’s Natalie Martinez. More information on the event is available at www.mygrind.com. Or, if it isn’t, it should be soon. Impeccable sources tell this site that there should be an update Monday (if that link isn’t working properly).

The event runs 7-10 p.m. with raffle drawings and music. Persons may RSVP by Nov. 14 at CHICAGOINFO@gmail.com for complimentary admission.

You have no idea how long the video-research department worked to come up with the following footage (but it was worth every hour spent):
