‘Tis the Season — for Bulls, not Bears

December 14, 2011 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: It would appear the Chicago Bears season will be over before the Bulls’ starts. Even if the Bears still will have contractual obligations to show up for their Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 games.

November Playboy Playmate Ciara Price is scheduled to appear on Thursday's "Sports& Torts" with David Spada and Elliott Harris on talkzone.com at noon Chicago time.

* Speaking of the Bulls, members of the NBA team treated 20 students at Chicago Bulls College Prep to $100 gift cards as part of “Shop With a Bull” on Dec. 12 at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Niles, Ill. The event also featured the team’s six NBA championship trophies for shoppers to pose with. Participating players were rookie Jimmy Butler, Taj Gibson, John Lucas III and C.J. Watson. Words has it that Gibson and Watson paid for items themselves when their students exceeded the credit-card limits.

* Speaking of buying Bulls-related items, tickets for all their home games at the United Center go on sale Friday (Dec. 16) at 10 a.m. at Bulls.com, 1-800-4NBA-TIX, the United Center and Ticketmaster. Season tickets and group tickets are available now by calling the Bulls at (312) 455-4000. More information is available at Bulls.com/tickets.

* Elsewhere in the world of souvenirs, word from New York is Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter gave his romantic liaisons memorabilia for spending time with him. Which leads one to wonder whether there might be a market for a wearable item proclaiming: “I bleeped Derek Jeter and all I got was autographed memorabilia & this lousy T-shirt!”

* Speaking of the Yankees, Lou Piniella reportedly is joing the YES Network as an analyst. Which certainly would seem a better idea than have him manage the Cubs.

* CBS late-night host David Letterman: “Michele Bachmann is picking running mates. It’s like the Colts picking Super Bowl rings.”

'Tis the LFL season -- and, no, this is not the offending photo.

* In a visit to the library Tuesday, yours truly flipped through the pages of a Chicago newspaper that used to employ Elliott Harris and feature his Quick Hits column. Among the letters to the editor was one complaining about a Lingerie Football League photo that had appeared in Monday’s sports section. And, of course, the letter was accompanied by another glimpse of the photo in question (though cropped and not in color). That ought to placate the letter-writer. If it’s any consolation to the offended party, the Sun-Times is diminished in size (some would say quality, too).

* Your humble correspondent is looking forward to having November Playboy Playmate Ciara Price on Thursday’s “Sports & Tort” with David Spada on talkzone.com at noon Chicago time (also available via podcast). One of the few times that spending time on research sounds good.

* The feeling around here is that for the New Orleans Hornets to trade Chris Paul to Los Angeles (the Clippers being the team of the moment), it somehow is going to have to include a Kardashian to be named.

* Speaking of Kardashians, Lamar Odom — married to Khloe of the reality TV/tabloid klan — said he was disrespected by the way the Lakers treated him in trading him (unsuccessfully to New Orleans before dealing him to the Dallas Mavericks). Some would say he already had disrespected himself by his involvement in a reality television series that featured mostly his in-laws. Any athlete expecting to be respected by an organization is fooling himself/herself into thinking somehow he/she might be something other than a piece of meat. And sometimes even that filet mignon ends up as ground beef.

* There must be some method to the madness Jerry Sandusky’s legal team exhibited Tuesday by waiving at the last minute a preliminary hearing after alleged sex-abuse victims were prepared to testify. Who knew a reverse would be part of the former Penn State defensive coordinator’s game plan? Legal, but reprehensible.

For those concerned about being able to see the Luvabulls, you can find video of third-season team member Tina at bulls.com. Sadly, this site cannot display directly her video. Instead, we offer Bill Wennington. Somehow it’s just not the same, but the best we can do for the moment:

Some Benny the Bull action from “Shop With a Bull” Monday at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Niles, Ill.:

Rookie Jimmy Butler chats after participating in “Shop With a Bull”:
