Tigers a Lost Cause; Irish, Northwestern Winning Ones

October 28, 2012 @ No Comments

Is it too late to change that forecast of the Detroit Tigers winning the World Series in six games? The San Francisco Giants took a 3-0 series lead with a 2-0 victory Saturday night (Oct. 27) in Detroit. Meaning the baseball season is one more Tigers loss away from being over. And another prediction — Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander being Series Most Valuable Player — probably isn’t going to happen. Well, not this season.

Speaking of winners, here is the lovely Lariyah Daniels.

* If it’s any consolation to all the other big-league teams out there (even the Chicago Cubs), they couldn’t be doing any worse against the Giants than the Tigers are. Well, unless they would have been shut out three times rather the two (Games 2 and 3) that Detroit was.

* For college football fans, Notre Dame indeed is impressive. If you didn’t catch the Irish’s 30-13 victory at Oklahoma on Saturday night, that’s OK. At 8-0 Notre Dame not only has its eyes on a top-tier bowl game but also on a possible national championship. About the only challenging regular-season game left on the ND schedule is the season finale at Southern Cal. And the Trojans lost Saturday 39-36 at Arizona. Meaning the Irish should be in perfect position for a perfect season. Also meaning the Irish are in a perfect position to have USC spoil their perfection.

* Speaking of perfection, Illinois’ football team is far from it — although the Illini (2-6) will be much closer to it Nov. 3. That’s when they play Ohio State (9-0) in Columbus, Ohio. As for the Illini’s homecoming loss to Indiana, which had lost 11 consecutive Big Ten conference contests? Well, basketball season isn’t far away. Just don’t expect the Illini to beat the highly regarded Hoosier in hoops any time soon either.

* Speaking of bowl berths, Northwestern can contemplate various venues it might like to visit, as it enjoys a week off after defeating Iowa 28-17 in Evanston, Ill., and improving to 7-2. Not that the Wildcats’ marketing mavens need any assistance, but they might want to look ahead to 2013 and think about promoting quarterback Kain Colter for the Heisman Trophy. A “Citizen Kain” campaign would seem reasonable. And the perfect place to kick off all that? A restaurant. Namely, Rosebud.

Your 'Champs for Charity'' Ice Girls Jen, Colleen, Paige and Ashley,

As promised, there is plenty of additional video from the “Champs for Charity” hockey event Friday (Oct. 26) at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. NHL Players Association chief Don Fehr was at the game and met with the media. Also at the game were former Chicago Blackhawks Ice Crew members Ashley, Colleen, Jen and Paige — who showed they still have the skills that made them fan favorites at Hawks games at the United Center. The lovely ladies were kind enough to allow your humble correspondent to interview them in their dressing room. We will save that video for another day. Which means we have something to look forward as the week goes forward. Plenty of video of hockey players, too — for those inclined to prefer that to this fab foursome (no explanation for some folks’ taste).

Anyway, here are some videos for your perusal:

For the squeamish, may we suggest skipping this video for something more enjoyable after this. During Saturday’s game against Tennessee, South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore suffered a season-ending (and possible career-ending) injury.

On a kinder, gentler note, here is lovely Lariyah Daniels — a favorite of this site — with some nutrition advice:

And, for those who enjoy a little musical interlude featuring Psy and his “Gangnam Style,” here is a Halloween-themed version. And for those who enjoy seeing actual females part of the video, we have one of those, too:
