Thibodeau to Lakers? Let Rumor Mill Begin

May 2, 2014 @ No Comments

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Chicago Bulls might be considering a trade? One that includes Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau? And so the Bulls’ offseason begins — with a report from L.A. that the Lakers would like to have the Bulls’ permission to talk to Thibodeau about their coaching vacancy. Some folks in Chicago recoil at the thought. But if Thibodeau is interested and the Lakers are willing to deal a first-round draft pick and take Carlos Boozer off the Bulls’ hands, it might be tough for the Bulls to walk away from that.

* Speaking of Thibs to L.A., it means the Bulls would need to find a new coach. There goes the continuity the team has built up. Oh, so a new coach would mean perhaps the Bulls wouldn’t be worn out by the time the postseason starts? Gee, that would be horrible, wouldn’t it.

* For those Bulls fans who think forward Taj Gibson should win the Sixth Man Award rather than guard Jamal Crawford of the Los Angeles Clippers, consider this: Crawford averaged 18.6 points in 30.3 minutes per game in the regular season; Gibson averaged 13.0 points and 6.8 rebounds 28.7 minutes per game. And if the Bulls had an offensive threat such as Crawford (with an effective forward other than Gibson coming off the bench), they still might be playing in the postseason. Yes, Gibson can play defense (not exactly Crawford’s forte). If that’s a major consideration, maybe Gibson takes home an award. But he might want to wait before clearing space in his home for it.

* Ex-Cub of the day: Tampa Bay Rays designated hitter David DeJesus drove in both runs in a 2-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at Boston. He homered (his second) and drew a bases-loaded walk off former White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy. By going 1-for-2, DeJesus raised his batting average to .200.

* Ex-White Sox of the day: Toronto left-hander Mark Buehrle improved to 5-1 in a 7-3 victory at Kansas City. He allowed three runs (two earned) and seven hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. His earned-run average is 2.25. Honorable mention goes to Blue Jays second baseman Chris Getz went 2-for-5 and scored a run. He is batting .364 (4-for-11) since being recalled from the minors.
