Seeking Bliss in Marathon Night of TV Viewing

April 19, 2013 @ No Comments

Because the late-night/early-morning coverage of the events in the Boston area that involved a security guard being shot to death at MIT, a police shootout and explosions in nearby Watertown, Mass., and supect (or suspects) being apprehended, there will be less verbiage than usual.

Members of the 2013 Chicago Bliss hope to climb to the top of the LFL.

Multi-tasking is not a strength around the editorial offices at elliottharris.com, so watching television and trying to be creative type was something of a challenge.

Watching events unfold was captivating, if not particularly informative. So much time was spent showing the same video snippets and listening to broadcast journalists finding ways to say “I’m not really certain” or “I don’t know” in much longer sound bites.

As time went on, it appeared that the events of Thursday night had some relation to the Boston Marathon bombings on Monday that killed three people and injured numerous others.

The ongoing events are another example of why newspapers face problems with their print product in the 21st century when so much information (or misinformation) flows so rapidly. Newspapers — the print product — always should have a place, if for no other reason than to provide proof of sports teams winning championships or similar moments of note that can be placed in a frame and placed on a wall.

Somehow a computer printout of an internet story doesn’t quite seem suitable for framing.

This is what I like to think of as work: posing with Heather Furr and Jamie Barwick at Chicago Bliss media day.

* Speaking of championships (this is where we make a really awkward seque, but it’s the best that some of us can do at 3:30 a.m.), the Chicago Bliss will try to take its first steps to a title with the Legends Football League team’s season opener Friday (April 19) at 9 p.m. against the Los Angeles Temptation at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

The Bliss last played a real game in 2011 when it was in the Lingerie Football League. The LFL has changed its name, but its remains essentially the same product. It’s 7-on-7 tackle football in a league of female players.

* Elsewhere in the world of TV viewing (this of a much more pleasant nature), Comcast SportsNet will provide comprehensive coverage of “Pat Foley Night” at the Chicago Blackhawks game. The Hawks are honoring Foley for 30 years as the play-by-play voice of the team. Coverage will begin at 7 p.m. as part of the pregame show. Included will be Susannah Collins interviewing Foley, some of his memorable calls and more. CSN Chicago.com also will have additional coverage.
