Seahawks Score Early, Often in Super Bowl Victory

February 3, 2014 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: OK, so the highlight of Super Bowl XLVIII was Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers performing at halftime. Or Queen Latifah singing “America the Beautiful” or Renee Fleming singing the national anthem. Unless you were a Seattle Seahawks fan. In which case the 43-8 victory against the Denver Broncos just might surpass any of that.

* The first offensive play of the game resulted in a safety when the Broncos center snapped the ball when quarterback Peyton Manning apparently was not expecting him to do so. The safety led to a 2-0 Seahawks lead. Meaning folks who wagered on the game’s first points coming on a safety were quite happy. Of course, some folks wondered might have wondered whether one of those folks might have been wearing an orange Broncos jersey.

* If the Super Bowl showed anything, it was that the NFL’s best defense can shut down the NFL’s best offense. Well, that and even the league’s best offense can make mistakes that leave it looking like an ineffective Chicago Bears offense with Jay Cutler at the helm.

* Speaking of quarterbacks, Seattle’s Russell Wilson was impressive but failed to win Most Valuable Player honors (teammate Malcolm Smith became the third linebacker to take home the MVP award). Quarterbacks had won six of the seven previous MVP trophies and have won 26 times in the game’s 48-game history. Dallas’ Chuck Howley (1971) and Baltimore’s Ray Lewis (2001) were the other linebackers to win MVP honors.

* Some of us found a new way to pass the day during the Super Bowl pregame: sweep snow off the roof of our dwelling. Hint: recommended for ranch-style edifices. Not the most successful of endeavors. We might have done a better job if we had been able to harness some of the hot air from broadcasts filling time till the actual game.
