Roller Derby on a Roll

October 21, 2011 @ No Comments

OK, so the Roller Derby coverage hasn’t been as comprehensive as some enthusiasts might have hoped. It’s still better than a lot of other media outlets. Case in point: the videos that accompany today’s effort. Individuals featured are Kelley Young of the Kansas City Roller Warriors and Varla Vendetta of the Windy City Rollers.

Roller Derby star Kelley Young of the Kansas City Roller Warriors.

For those unfamiliar with the wonderful world of flat-track roller derby (and there’s probably a few folks out there who are slightly unfamiliar), Kelly is a roller-derby superstar. She skated to fame as Snot Rocket before she took a year off in 2009 and came back using her own name.

Rolling right along, the Windy City Rollers will host the final home bout of the season on Saturday (Oct. 22) at the UIC Pavilion. The first whistle will be at 6 p.m. when WCR’s Second Wind and the Bleeding Heartland Roller Girls Flatliners hit the track. At 7:30 p.m., the WCR All-Stars face the Tampa Bay Derby Darlins.

The evening is being promoted as Monster Bash Night. There will be contests and prizes for costumes. Tickets ($22) are available at Ticketmaster or the UIC box office.

WCR defeated the Minnesota RollerGirls 123-100 on Oct. 14 to capture the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association’s North Central region playoffs for the third consecutive year. Both squads will go to the WFTDA Championships Nov. 11-13 in Denver.
