Reason to Enjoy Baseball’s Postseason

October 12, 2012 @ No Comments

In a best-of-five series, there is nothing better than a Game 5 — although the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals might disagree slightly. Each team had a chance to win its division series with a victory Thursday (Oct. 11), but both lost. The Baltimore Orioles prevailed 2-1 in 13 innings in the ALDS, while the Washington Nationals won on a ninth-inning, Jayson Werth home run in a 2-1 victory over the Cards.

Summer Rae is enjoying the change from football to wrestling.

* Losing in Game 5s on Thursday were Cincinnati and Oakland. Which means Reds manager Dusty Baker saw his team lose the last three games of the NLDS to San Francisco. Of course, Chicago Cubs fans remember Baker as the Cubs manager when the 2003 team was five outs away from its first World Series since 1945 — and lost Game 6 and 7 to the Florida Marlins.

* If there is any better pitcher a team would want to have in a clinching contest, it has to be Detroit’s Justin Verlander. Well, unless Bob Gibson and/or Sandy Koufax will be coming out of retirement and able to perform the way they did 40-plus years ago.

* Interesting the way media reported the death of New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi’s father Jerry. The Yankee skipper was in the dugout for the American League Division Series Game 4 vs. the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Thursday (Oct. 11). Coverage included headlines such as “Joe Girardi to manage Game 4 hours after father’s death.” The elder Girardi died Saturday (Oct. 6), so the headline is true, although the number of hours can be counted in days. New of Jerry Girardi’s death broke Thursday, so some media outlets thought the item merited an immediacy that does not exist. And presumably those headlines that gave a sense of something more immediate is better than saying: “Girardi’s dad still dead.”

Jaime Edmondson liked Pittsburgh over Tennesse in Thursday's game.

Playboy Playmate Jaime Edmondson is back from vacation and able to make her NFL pigskin picks. And more importantly — to some of us — her pics. She had the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Tennessee Titans for Thursday night’s game. The Titans won, but that won’t stop anyone around here from running the photo that she tweeted to accompant her selection.

For those who would like to follow Jaime on Twitter, you can click on @jaimeedmondson.

For those who are interested in such things, Jaime tweeted she has been packing in advance of spending the baseball offseason in Arizona with boyfriend Evan Longoria, the Tampa Bay Rays third baseman. The challenge for Jaime will be similar to when she was spending time at the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles: arising in time to make her Sunday selections. Well, she always came through from L.A., so Arizona shouldn’t be a problem.

The Chicago Bulls play an exhibition game Friday in Champaign. It’s a home game, so the Luvabulls dance team should be there (for those interested in attending the game for something other than basketball). Here is some video from the team’s exhibition opener Tuesday:

Proof that Summer Sanders actually was with David Spada and Elliott Harris,

Another edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris is available at talkzone.com. Archived for posterity — or a reasonable facsimile thereof. The Oct. 11 guests were former Olympic swimmer Summer Sanders and Pro Football Hall of Famer Harry Carson, the former New York Giants linebacker. Both were great guests on the critically acclaimed (in the Spada and Harris households — and reportedly even elsewhere) program.

Summer was not an in-studio guest, so the co-hosts did the next-best thing. They went to her when she was in Chicago on Tuesday (Oct. 9) for an appearance on behalf of Helmets on Heads, a bicycle-safety program sponsored by Schwinn. Summer was gracious enough to sit down for an interview that covered a variety of topics. To partake, you may click here.

Speaking of Summer, here is wrestling’s Summer Rae, who once played for the Lingerie Football League’s Chicago Bliss as Danielle Moinet:
