Quality Start for Quintana but Loss for White Sox

June 20, 2014 @ No Comments

Chicago White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana allowed two runs in seven innings Thursday night against the host Minnesota Twins. Meaning he picked up his 10th quality start of the season in 15 tries. Meaning the Sox are tied for fourth in the American League with 38 (which happens also to be the number of losses the Sox have this season).

* Oh, and the Sox lost 4-2. Twins starter Yohan Pino also had a quality start and a no-decision. At age 30, he was decidedly the oldest Twins pitcher to make his big-league starting debut. And no doubt much happier after the game than Quintana.

* Speaking of Sox pitching stats, the team remains the only one the major leagues without a shutout. Even though the Sox may have had some pitching problems this season, the research department at ElliottHarris.com would like to remind the Sox that there is an overwhelming chance they will win, if they do toss a shutout.

* With the Chicago Cubs having a day off, Comcast SportsNet provided comprehensive coverage of the franchise’s minor league hopefuls. CSN was on hand for 2014 top draft pick Kyle Schwarber’s debut with the Kane County Cougars (he went 1-for-3). CSN also had a report on the Iowa Cubs debut of 2013 top draft pick Kris Bryant, who was 1-for-4 with a home run, and also some footage of Javy Baez.

* Wondering if the White Sox have any prospects who merit CSN coverage. Or is the idea to have fans focus on the future of the Cubs rather than look at the product provided on the big-league level.

* Speaking of focusing on the future, let me know when (if?) Carmelo Anthony decides not to stay with the New York Knicks and becomes a free agent. Maybe then it will be time to speculate on whether he might join the Bulls.

* Similarly, do tell when (if?) LeBron James opts to depart the Miami Heat. Something says if the Bulls somehow could land King James, Bulls fans would embrace him the way they did Dennis Rodman when the former Detroit Pistons bad boy became a Bull.

* Speaking of Rodman, he merited a mention on David Letterman’s late-night show. Said Letterman: “It’s getting worse in Iraq. President Obama says he might have to send in Dennis Rodman.”

* Nothing really to do with sports or anything we generally do around here, but condolences to the family of Gerry Goffin, a world-class lyricist who collaborated with Carole King on numerous hit songs of my youth.
