Madness — March, Politics, Media and Otherwise

March 16, 2012 @ No Comments

Wondering when Republican presidential aspirant Mitt Romney — in an effort to gain primary votes in Illinois — will say he picked the Illini to win the NCAA basketball tournament. Or maybe he can promise — if elected — Northwestern will be guaranteed its first NCAA tourney berth.

A photo of trainer Hadley Allen or one of a presidential hopeful? The editorial staff around here thinks this one is politically correct.

* Speaking of politicians and Illinois, Thursday’s television coverage of former governor Rod Blagojevich going to prison — complete with helicopter video following the vehicle conveying him — was less exciting, entertaining and informative than a late-season game when your team is out of contention for a championship run. At first glance, some of us thought TV might be showing recently dismissed Illini coach Bruce Weber being escorted out of Champaign.

* Speaking of championship runs, by the time some of us figure out where TruTV is on the cable lineup, there won’t be any more NCAA tournament games on it.

* Speaking of the NCAA tournament, No. 12 seed Viriginia Commonwealth University’s victory over Wichita State could be termed a “Shaka Shocker.” As in VCU coach Shaka Smart, one of the names tossed out as a possible replacement for Weber, and his team beating the Shockers. VCU next faces Indiana, if he’s curious how he might fare against Big Ten competition. And someone might need to explain to him how the Illini job would be a step up in something other than salary.

* Is there anything more exciting in college basketball than watching the foulfest in the final seconds of a game when a team tries to overcome a deficit? In a word: yes. Give the fouled team three free throws and maybe someday the last minute of a game won’t take 15 of actual time. And, yes, some of us were watching UNLV exploiting the foul strategy in its loss to Colorado — a game that ended 11:50 p.m. Central time (which speaks to how much idle time some of us have).

MISCELLANEOUS MATTERS:

* The Chicago Bulls are giving away bobbleheads before Friday’s game against Portland. Rather than a current player, the team will hand out — while supplies last — bobbleheads featuring broadcaster and former Bulls forward Stacey King. The doll also is capable of uttering:
If you’re scared, go buy a dog
Did you not get the memo, he is from Chicago
Too big, too strong, too fast, too good
Stop it, don’t do ‘em like that
Give me the hot sauce

Doors at the United Center open at 5:30 p.m.

* A baseball signed by baseball legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig will be featured in the Live Auction at the Dempster Foundation Casino Night May 9 at the Palmer House Chicago. To bid, persons have to be at the event. For information, tickets and sponsorship opportunities regarding the event, you can click here.

Thank you to Staci Boyer for being an in-studio guest on “Sports & Torts” with David Spada and Elliott Harris on Thursday’s program on talkzone.com. The personal trainer, author, motivational speaker, bikini competitor and more was gracious enough to take time out from her busy life to spend some quality time talking about a variety of topics, including life in the Navy in the Persian Gulf War. Also on the show were former college basketball coach Lefty Driesell and former NBA player and coach Richie Guerin. In case you missed the program, you can click on it here.

Speaking of “Sports & Torts” (and even if we weren’t, we would include the following), say hello to Hadley Allen. She is a personal trainer in Chicago. And, if things go according to plan (which on rare occasion they actually do), Hadley will be the in-studio guest on the March 29 edition of the show. She is among the trainers featured on the television program “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” on NBC Nonstop Chicago. Hadley also has a web site, boomingwithhadley.com. Here is some video with Hadley showing some exercises that you can do fairly simply. Well, “simply” meaning you don’t need fancy equipment to do (meaning there is no excuse not to exercise):
