Illuminating Experience at Penn State

Random thoughts while waiting for 11/12/13:

*Friday night delight? A candlelit vigil for victims of child sex abuse was held was held on the Penn State campus. A crowd of close to 10,000 students participated. A touching tribute in light of the events of the past week that dismissal of football coach Joe Paterno. It will be interesting to see whether any outpouring of sympathy for Paterno at the Nittany Lions’ home game against Nebraska on Saturday holds a candle to that vigil.

* Penn State placing assistant coach Mike McQueary on administrative leave has to be the first step toward his firing. McQueary was a graduate assistant in 2002 when he saw former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky taking sexual advantage of a young boy in a Penn State shower. Maybe while McQueary is on administrative leave he will have time to find his moral compass — although admittedly far too late.

* Those threats against McQueary remain vague. Were they from folks for or against his telling Paterno about the 2002 incident? Is there a reason that hasn’t been clarified? Because it would make Penn State look worse?

* Encouraging Penn State fans to wear white to Saturday’s game as a show of support for Paterno is downright dumb. Especially after the school was encouraging fans to wear blue as a show of solidarity against child abuse.

* Former players and/or anyone else wanting to raise money for Sandusky’s legal defense is free to do so in the United States. They also are free to read the 23-page grandy jury report before doing so. In which case they just might be disinclined to support an alleged pedophile. If you don’t like that word, read the report and try to figure out a better one.

* The Marlins have changed the franchise name from Florida to Miami. And they apparently have changed their dollar-conscious ways to a free-spending approach. They reportedly have offered deals to free agents Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes and Albert Pujols. ON the free-agent market, St. Louis Cardinals first baseman is a hot commodity. Signing with Miami would make him a humid one, too. About the same as in St. Louis, although with more rain in Florida.

Even though she picked the wrong team to prevail in Thursday's NFL game, Jaime Edmondson looks like a winner from this perspective.
