How Sweet It Is to Cover Chicago Sky Practice

July 20, 2013 @ No Comments

This season has hardly been a piece of cake for the Chicago Sky. Yes, the team is off to an 11-4 start and leads the Eastern Conference, as the Sky seeks its first postseason presence in franchise history. And, yes, this appears to be the most talented team in franchise history. But the reality is there are no cupcakes in the WNBA.

Cupcakes?

Did somebody say cupcakes? There actually are cupcakes in the WNBA. And your humble correspondent will tell you all about them. Or as much as is known. Yes, this is what happens when some people do not get started crafting their daily offering start typing furiously at 5 a.m. are in the right place at the right time.

The right place was the Sachs Recreation Center in Deerfield, Ill. The right time was Fridy (July 19) while the Sky was conducting practice a day after defeating the New York Liberty 75-55 in Newark, N.J. The Sky is to play the Liberty again Saturday. So of course going to practice seemed a reasonable thing to do if for no other reason than to talk with guard Epiphanny Prince and rookie forward Elena Delle Donne. Both were voted starters for the Eastern Conference for the WNBA al-star game. Because the elliottharris.com travel budgetfailed to provide for airfare to see the SKy-Liberty contest, this was the first time to tak to the all-stars since the results were announced Thursday night.

Cupcakes? What happened to the cupcakes?

Ah, yes.

And so it was that after practice coach Pokey Chatman gathered the team in a huddle at center court to provide profound comments. And for everyone to sing “Happy Birthday” to center Carolyn Swords, who was celebrating her 24th birthday and who the day before had enjoyed a 12-point, five-steal effort as she filled in for starter Sylvia Fowles, idled again by a sprained ankle.

Who knew it was Swords’ birthday? Obviously someone. Or more than one. In addition to the singing, there was a box from a local bakery. In it were cupcakes for the birthday girl and her teammates.

And, yes, as fate (and the generosity of the former Boston College standout) would have it, for all the media in attendance. Namely your humble correspondent. Hubmle? Well, perhaps there is some question about that. Well-fed and grateful to Swords and whoever brought the cupcakes? Without question.

And that is why Yogi Berra — or whoever said it — was so right about life being 90 percent showing up.

I forget what the rest of the quote is, but it very well could have somethng to do with eating cupcakes.

And so ends another tastefully done effort. Well, there is video for those so inclined, but you get the picture.
