Figures Worth Noting, Bears and Otherwise

November 28, 2011 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings:

In an effort to be more competitive with quarterback Jay Cutler sidelined, maybe the Chicago Bears should seek to have field-goal scoring changed immediately, so that it is based on distance: 3 for 30 yards or less, 4 for 31-40 yards, 5 for 41-50 and 6 for 51 yards or more.

* Next Sunday’s Bears game against the Kansas City Chiefs should provide a wonderful opportunity for Bears fans who were/are Kyle Orton enthusiasts to feel mixed emotions. They should see Orton show why the Bears opted to trade him for Cutler, and the Bears should prevail.

* As committed as the Bears might be to winning, it will be interesting to see how committed to Caleb Hanie they are as their starting quarterback. Something says Josh McCown– even not knowing the playbook — would have known better than to be called for grounding on what turned out to be the game-ending play Sunday against the Raiders.

* Speaking of commitment to winning, you have to wonder how Illinois will live without Ron Zook, fired Sunday as coach after his team lost its last six games. Well, at least he won’t be walking out of press conferences anymore when asked about his job status.

* Something says Broncos QB Tim Tebow will be in for a rude awakening when the Bears visit Denver for a Dec. 11 encounter. Unless the temperature drops below 32 degrees, he won’t be walking on water. And even then, the Broncos will find themselves on a slippery slope — or field — with a quarterback whose feet are more of a threat than his arm.

Lindsey Vonn has seen her marriage go downhill.

* Speaking of slopes, American Olympic gold-medal-winning skier Lindsey Vonn and her husband of four years, Thomas Vonn, are divorcing. “This is an extremely difficult time in my personal life and I hope the media and my fans can respect my need for privacy on this matter,” she said in a statement. He told the Associated Press in an email to the AP that he filed for divorce last Monday. The couple were wed Sept. 29, 2007. She was one of the faces of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics where she captured a gold medal and a bronze while competing on a badly bruised shin. And, yes, her marriage would appear to have gone downhill as well.

For those disinclined to focus on football the day after a Bears loss, the editorial staff at elliottharris.com would like you to meet Aubrie Nelson. She is a former Chicago Slaughter dancer who has moved on to the wonderful world of fitness competition. She competed in the recent NABBA Grand Lakes Open in Oswego, Ill., and captured the figure tall and overall titles.

We’ll look forward to seeing more of Aubrie when she competes again in 2012.
