Cubs’ Wood Outduels Dodgers’ Kershaw

August 28, 2013 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has an incredible 1.72 earned-run average. He aso has a 13-8 record — with the latest loss coming Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs 3-2 at Dodger Stadium. For those who contend Kershaw should win he National League Cy Young Award, doesn’t a loss to the Cubs automatically disqualify you?

* Speaking of pitchers, Cubs left-hander Travis Wood actually had a better outing than Kershaw. At the plate — he singled and scored the team’s first run — and on the mound.

* Former Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano hit two home runs for the New York Yankees to give him 400 for his career. He has 10 homers in 25 August games and 11 total since the Yanks obtained him July 26. Since joining the Yankees, he has seven more homers and 18 more runs batted in than any other Yankee.

* Speaking of New York teams and former Cubs outfielders, the Mets had a Marlon Byrd T-shirt giveaway at Tuesday’s game — hours after they had traded him away to Pittsburgh. Gee, you’d think the Pirates and Mets could have waited a few hours to announce the deal after the game.

* Still speaking of former Cubs outfielders, Felix Pie is in the majors with the Pirates. He went 2-for3 Tuesday and is 4-for-9 this season — with four strikeouts. Better batting average (temporarily), same old swing and a miss.

* Bears receiver Brandon Marshall, who is recovering from a hip injury, says he is trying to figure out where he hits in new coach Marc Trestman’s offense. The football analysis department at elliottharris.com is pretty sure Marshall is supposed to be catching passes. Provided that he can make it onto the field.

If it’s Wednesday (and the chances seem pretty good because yesterday was Tuesday — provided that you are reading this on Aug. 28, 2013, or a subsequent Wednesday), then we are only a day away from another edition of “Sports & Torts” at noon Central time with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris on Talkzone.com.

If things go according to plan (and they actually do from time to time), the guests on Thurday’s program will be September Playboy Playmate Bryiana Noelle and former NFL star Hugh McElhenny, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The show will become available later Thursday on Talkzone.com.
