Cubs Ready to Celebrate Wrigley’s 100th

April 4, 2014 @ No Comments

The Chicago Cubs have their home opener Friday. It will be a celebration of all that is good with the team. Meaning, namely Wrigley Field, which is celebrating its 100th year (although the Cubs did not start playing there until 1916). As if there might be something animate for Cubs fans to be animated about?

* Speaking of Cubs excitement, Emilio Bonifacio went 2-for-4 — and that lowered his batting average to .688 — in a 3-2 victory at Pittsburgh after two season-opening losses. Third baseman Mike Olt hit the first home run of his career for the Cubs. Starter Jason Hammel allowed one run and two hits in 6 2/3 innings. Yes, Cubs fans will take delight in such happenings. Hey, if you can’t do it in the first week of the season, when can you?

* Cubs outfielder Junior Lake wore the wrong road jersey during the first inning of Thursday’s victory. Well, that’s one way to look at it. Or you could see it as all the others Cubs were wearing the wrong jersey.

* The Ricketts family is looking into the possibility of selling shares of the ballclub to finance ballpark renovation and other projects around Wrigley Field. That approach presumably is better than having the team’s new mascot Clark panhandling outside and around Wrigley Field. Or chairman Tom Ricketts do that.

* White Sox Matt Lindstrom allowed two ninth-innings runs as the Minnesota Twins rallied for a 10-9 victory. It was his first blown save of the season. There will be more. The question is how many will there be before manager Robin Ventura makes a change. Yes, it is too early to panic. Or maybe too late to find a proven closer.

* You would think there could be some sort of warm alcoholic beverage for fans to enjoy during cold-weather ballgames. Hot toddy, anyone?

* Thank you to Playboy Playmate Shanice Jordyn for being on Thursday’s “Sports & Torts” on Talkzone.com. Also thanks to Walter Jones, who will be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August in Canton, Ohio.
