Courtship at Bulls Game & Other Engaging Folks

February 16, 2012 @ No Comments

It was Valentine’s Day, and the Chicago Bulls were looking for a special way to celebrate.

It was Valentine’s Day, and Colin Walsh was looking for a special way to propose to girlfriend Tita Tellez.

Babette March was the first SI swimsuit cover girl.

Sounds like a marriage made in heaven. Or at least an engagement made in the United Center.

And so it was that on Feb. 14, 2012 — in what was supposed to be one of those contests that occur when the basketball game is stopped — that Tita was wandering blindfolded on the court. She was stopped at midcourt, took off the blindfold only to see Colin on his knee. Colin, who bears a resemblance to actor Adrian Grenier, had no entourage with him on the court.

The Bulls provided great cooperation to pull off the unusual proposal — complete with Benny the Bull viewing from above and sliding down a rope to give his blessings on the love.

Family members were in on the plan — with the exception of Tita, who was attending her first Bulls game. As your humble correspondent explained later to Colin, Colin has set the bar extremely high for Valentine’s Day. How he will be able to come close to matching the magic moment is going to be something of a creative challenge.

We could go on and on to describe how things unfolded, but fortuntely there is video from Gloria Martinez-Weiland, Colin’s grandmother and wife of Bulls stats crew member Don Weiland.

After the game, Tita and Colin took time to chat about the highlight of the evening (other than the Bulls’ victory):

If you watch to the end of this video with Joakim Noah, you will have him asked about why Chris Paul was included in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and he wasn’t:

Speaking of the SI swimsuit edition, Babette March, the cover model for the first swimsuit issue in 1964, is scheduled to appear on the Thursday (Feb. 16) “Sports & Torts” with David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon (Chicago time) on talkzone.com. Also on the show will be basketball greats John Havlicek and Jerry Lucas. For those unable to listen/view the live program, it will be available on podcast.
