Bulls’ Pitch Courtship of Carmelo a Brief Fling?

July 2, 2014 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: The Chicago Bulls’ courting of Carmelo Anthony on the first day of free agency occurred Tuesday at the United Center. The Bulls featured him on signage outside the building. That’s supposed to impress him when the New York Knicks can have him on a much larger-than-life video board in Times Square?

* As part of the Bulls’ recruiting pitch, they had pictures of Anthony in a Bulls uniform with him holding a championship trophy. Isn’t the sort of thing colleges do when they are trying to land a high school player?

* As part of the Bulls’ recruiting pitch, current players Joakim Noah, Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson apparently were part of the gathering. You want to impress Anthony (who says he is not necessarily looking for the most money — something the Knicks can offer — but rather a chance to win a title)? Tell him if he becomes a Bull and the team makes it to the NBA Finals, they’ll put a statue of him next to Michael Jordan’s outside the United Center; win an NBA title — or more — and the statue will be larger than MJ’s.

* As part of the Bulls’ recruiting pitch, the aforementioned Bulls players should have told him in Chicago he would be under less media scrutiny — off the court. No New York Post to pester players could be a selling point.

* As part of the Bulls’ recruiting pitch, coach Tom Thibodeau should have told Anthony he would be able to shoot without impunity (well, as long as there was reasonably accuracy) and he would receive guaranteed bonus money if he was unable to launch at least 25 shots per game.

* As part of the Bulls’ recruiting pitch, general manager Gar Forman should have told Anthony the forward could have a say on one other player to be added to the roster. Not even Jordan in his prime had the ability.

* If the previous paragraph wouldn’t be enough to sway Anthony, the Bulls should have told him he also could make the call on at least two roster spots for the Luvabulls.

* As part of the Bulls’ recruiting pitch, the organization should have told him his wife La La could sing the national anthem before any games that she so desires.

* As part of the Bulls’ recruiting pitch, they should have told him they already have line up an endorsement deal that he wouldn’t be able to have if his decides to go to Miami or Houston or Dallas or Los Angeles: snow blowers.

* Anthony is said to have gone out to dinner with Rose and Noah. The main course should have been hot dogs to see if Anthony put ketchup on his. Which, if he indeed do such a thing, would outrage a certain segment of Chicagoans, thereby making it easier after he does not join the Bulls to say anyone like that does not deserve to be a Bull.
