Bulls Hoping to Stop Thunder’s Westbrook

March 5, 2015 @ No Comments

One of the Chicago Bulls’ goals Thursday night against visiting Oklahoma City is to limit guard Russell Westbrook — to a double-double. He had 49 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists in the Thunder’s 123-118 home victory against Philadelphia on Wednesday night. Yeah, but he needed overtime to achieve his fourth consecutive triple-double. Sp that should make Bulls fans feel better, right? Uh, sure.

* Speaking of Westbrook, STATS reports he is the first player since the Bulls’ Michael Jordan in 1989 to have four consecutive triple-doubles and the first since MJ in ’89 to post consecutive triple-doubles with at least 40 points. His Airness had seven consecutive triple-doubles in ’89 (and 10 in an 11-game span).

* Still speaking of Westbrook, he had the best plus/minus rating among Thunder starters: minus-12. Former Bull D.J. Augustin (17 points) had the worst plus/minus rating among five Thunder reserves: plus-13. Make of all that whatever you will. The statistical-analysis department around here was busy dissecting the White Sox’ first spring training box score.

* Speaking of the Sox who defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 in the Cactus League opener, Jose Abreu went 2-for-3 and Avisail Garcia 2-for-2 to establish themselves as early contenders for the Cactus League Most Valuable Player. Well, along with teammates Adam Eaton and Alexei Ramirez who also went 2-for-3. Ramirez drove in three runs. Adam LaRoche had a two-run double in his first game with the Sox. No doubt there are Sox fans out there in cyberspace lamenting that their team’s offense has peaked too soon.

* If today is Thursday (and the odds seem overwhelming that it is because yesterday was Wednesday — provided that today is March 5, 2015, or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time for “Sports & Torts” co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris on Talkzone.com at noon Central time. The guests on this week’s show are March 2015 Playboy Playmate Chelsie Aryn and 2015 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees Tim Brown and Charles Haley. Podcast of the show will be available later Thursday (and presumably forever, or close to it) at Talkzone.com. There was some thought of running a photo of Brown and/or Haley rather than one of Chelsie (sure there was). Ultimately, the decision was to go with Chelsie. If you want to think that editorial decision was based on gender, go right ahead. You just might be right. Then again, when you have control of the editorial process, you pretty much can do what you want.
