Bears Reportedly Set to Deal Marshall to Jets

March 7, 2015 @ No Comments

The Brandon Marshall era appears over with the Chicago Bears. Reports have the Bears jettisoning the wide receiver to the Jets in a New York minute (OK, Tuesday afternoon after free agency opens) for a fifth-round draft choice. So much for the theory of Marshall being quarterback Jay Cutler’s security blanket and/or vice versa. Then again, Cutler could be gone before Thursday. If he is on the roster then, he will be guaranteed $10 million of his salary for 2016. Can the Bears also interest the Jets — or any other team — in a QB?

* Speaking of the Bears and money, it is purely coincidental that the Marshall deal will save the team $7.7 million in cash and create $3.95 million in cap space. OK, maybe not purely coincidental.

* Jon Lester made his Cubs debut Friday. He did not allow a run in two innings. Meaning pretty soon manager Joe Maddon will name Lester the team’s starter for Game 1. No, not for Game 1 of the 2015 season; Maddon aleady has done that. For Game 1 of the World Series, of course.

* As predicted in this space Friday, the Chicago Bulls game at Indiana will not be remembered as “The Doug McDermott Game.” Not that the rookie from Creighton didcn’t do his part. He went 8-for-17 from the field (best percentage of any Bulls player) and had a career-high 16 points in 16 minutes. And, even though the statistical-analysis crew had Friday night off (thanks to a most generous boss), your humble correspondent is fairly certain McDermott’s points-per-48 minutes vs. the Pacers would be 48. And, yes, that’s a silly but occasionally entertaining stat. Had the Bulls prevailed rather than lose 98-84.

* Speaking of the Bulls, other than McDermott, they were 23-of-69 from the field. Once again, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we are fairly confident in declaring the rest of the Bulls shot 33 percent from the field. Aaron Brooks was 2-for-11, as he continues to provide the inconsistency that Derrick Rose did before being injured and requiring surgery. Nikola Mirotic was 3-for-13 (0-for-6 three-pointers) off the bench. Meaning he doesn’t have to worry about where to clear space for any Rookie of the Year or Sixth Man awards.

* On the bright (?) side for the Bulls, their next game is Sunday afternoon at San Antonio. No telling which players won’t dress for the Spurs. Because the game is to be nationally televised, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich might feel compelled to have his best players participate. Then again, they all performed Friday night in a victory vs. visiting Denver, so maybe Tim Duncan and/or Tony Parker will receive minimal minutes. Not that doing so tends to impact the Spurs much.

* Comcast SportsNet will provide coverage of the Minnie Minoso memorial service Saturday morning at 11:30. CSNChicago.com also will have a live video stream of the service to be held at Holy Family Church in Chicago.
