Bears Raise Ticket Prices As Well as Expectations

July 12, 2012 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts (or as close as we get to thinking around here): The Chicago Bears are raising ticket prices. Because. Because they have raised expectations? Single-game tickets that go on sale Friday (July 13) have risen from $74 to $101 for a 400-level seat. For season ticketholders, the price is $76. It appears the Bears have upped the ante considerably for single-game buys. At those prices, the Bears’ level of performance on the field better fall into the “up theirs” as well.

Something says Tasha Reign won't be wearing a Philadelphia Phillies jersey at the Chicago Exxxotica Expo this weekend.

* Kentucky’s John Calipari, who coached Derrick Rose collegiately at Memphis, believes the Chicago Bulls guard will more than come back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Appearing on ESPN 1000’s “Carmen, Jurko and Harry” show, Calipari said: “[Rose’s] skill set will be even better. I think his shooting will be even better because he only knows one thing. He almost has a fear, an anxiety about not being good enough.” Not sure that that assessment will make any scientific journals. Until Rose returns to the court, it’s unclear how that “almost fear” will heal things.

* Speaking of fear or anxiety or whatever, one of the more amusing moments of Wednesday’s “Boers and Bernstein” show on WSCR occurred when Dan Bernstein was going through some of the names associated with the James Bond movies. He talked around the name of Honor Blackman’s character in “Goldfinger” for concern that the FCC — oe someone — would punish him and/or the station. For all that goes on on that show, you’d think they could say “Pussy Galore” with impunity (if not with a straight face). Guess the audience will have to settle for the Dick Trickle material instead.

* The Chicago Sky had its second-largest crowd in team history (13,161 at the Allstate Arena). And it was loud thanks to a camp-day gathering comprised mostly of youngsters. The kids found plenty to cheer about — even if the Sky did lose 77-68 to the San Antonio Silver Stars.

Perhaps most noteworthy was Sky center Sylvia Fowle’s streak of 83 consecutive games with double-digit scoring (fourth-longest in WNBA history) ending. She had six points, all in the firt half. She played only 2:06 of the fourth quarter after being on the court for all 10 minutes of the third.

Reserve Shay Murphy led the Sky (8-8) with 20 points; Tamera Young had 18. Sophia Young and Danielle Robinson each scored 16 for San Antonio (12-5). The Sky outrebounded San Antonio 39-23 but had 22 turnovers to the Silver Stars’ 12.

“We’re not a very good basketball team right now, and that’s on me,” SKy coach Pokey Chatman said. “We’ll figure it out.”

The Sky plays Friday at home against Connecticut before taking a break for the Olympic Games in which Fowles and teammate Swin Cash will participate for the U.S. team.

If it’s Thursday (which I believe it might be provided that I survived Wednesday), then it is time once again for your (or anyone’s) weekly installment of “Sports & Torts” at noon Chicago time on talkzone.com with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris. Two wonderful fellows, if I may say so — and I may. And I’d better because who knows how many or how few might echo those sentiments.

Among the scheduled guests on the one-hour interview program is Nancy Faust, the former organist for the Chicago White Sox. Nancy retired from the Sox after the 2010 season. She still stays busy with various performances, including on Sunday home games for the Kane County Cougars. If she survives her “Sports & Torts” segment, Nancy will be performing Sunday (July 15) at the Cougars game in Geneva, Ill., against the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Cougars are the Class A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals. in case you were wondering (and even if you weren’t).

For persons interested in advertising on “Sports & Torts” (and possibly have an opportunity to be in the studio when a lovely lady such as Nancy sits in), you can contact david@injuryinillinois.com. You’ll be glad you did. Or David and Elliott will be glad you did. Hopefully all parties will be glad.

For those who did not watch the 2012 ESPY Awards Wednesday, the Miami Heat won for best team. Receiving the trophy were Juwan Howard and Mike Miller. Because nothing says the Miami Heat quite like Juwan Howard and Mike Miller. OK, maybe not. Perhaps because LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh had better things to do.

Not from the ESPYs, but so what:

For those who have not been paying attention the last few days around here (tsk, tsk!), the 2012 Exxxotica Expo Chicago is coming to town — if you’ll pardon the expression. The adult-entertainment event will be at the Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont on Friday-Sunday (July 13-15).

Among the scheduled participants is Tasha Reign, who also is fun to follow on Twiiter. You can do so at @tashareign. You can check out the event’s web site at here. A reminder that this is adult-themed. As if you need a reminder. Here is video of Tasha from the 2011 event:
