Barkley Laughing; Cutler Pondering

January 8, 2012 @ No Comments

For those television viewers looking for something Chicago-centric from Charles Barkley on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” the former NBA star did not disappoint.

Guest-hosting for the third time, he said in his opening monologue of the feat: “I bet Scottie Pippen and now he owes me $75,000.”

Sir Charles also took note of Michael Jordan’s recent engagement to Yvette Prieto: “Congrats. That’s going to go great, Mike.” As if he meant it.

There also was some vintage video footage of Barkley with the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Finals against the Bulls (for those unfamiliar with that series, the Bulls won).

Barkley did make note of his recent weight loss as part of being a Weight Watchers spokesman and dropping 38 pounds: “Or as I like to think of it, Muggsy Bogues.”

Chuckles was on pace early to be the best athlete-host of “SNL.” Not sure that title brings with it a ring, however. The point became moot as the material faded down the stretch. Story of his NBA life.

The photo-selection department at elliottharris.com debated late into the night and into the early hours of Sunday regarding running a photo of Barkley. It opted to use one (two actually, if you scroll down further) of Luvabulls rookie Brittany. Something says most visitors to this site will agree with the decision.

Meanwhile, back in reality (or at least on Twitter), Bears quarterback Jay Cutler was tweeting with former Denver Broncos teammate Brandon Marshall.

Watching Saturday’s NFL wild-card games, Marshall tweeted: “@JayCutler6 these young duos r the old us. Haha” #chemistry

Responded Cutler: “Please. We can run circles around these guys.”

More Marshall, on a quarterback-receiver relationship that looked good Saturday: “I miss @jaycutler6 believing in me like that.”

To which Cutler responded: “I can get #15 out of storage! Suit you back up.”

Noted Denver Broncos offensive lineman Ryan Clady: @BMarshall19 @jaycutler6 Aww you guys are BFF’s again. #Cute hahahaha

To which Cutler responded: “You can join us big guy.”

At the suggestion of a Twitter follower that the dymanic duo reunite, Cutler posted: “Let’s do it!”

Hmmmmmmmm.

Stranger things have happened. And, as non-stop tweeter Sean Jensen (he covers the Bears for a Chicago newspaper that formerly employed your humble correspondent) noted in responding whether the Bears could reunite the Cutler-Marshall tandem: “Sure. It’s possible. Miami is getting new head coach”

So Bears fans can have something to dream about while they hope some team eliminates the Green Bay Packers from the postseason. The Bears faithful can take some small (realy small) measure of comfort in knowing the Detroit Lions’ season lasted one more game than the Bears.” Then again, if the Bears had to go up against the New Orleans Saints in New Orleans (or just about anywhere), the Bears would be dealing with a similar fate. Unless, of course, Cutler was healty. And running back Matt Forte was healthy. And …

I suppose a word or two should be given regarding the Bulls, who were well on their way to the NBA title before losing Saturday night to the host Atlanta Hawks. Well, losing doesn’t do the defeat justice. The 109-94 loss was so bad that Derrick Rose was able to sit the last quarter.

Hindsight, of course, tells us Rose should have been resting Wednesday against Detroit late in the fourth quarter rather than driving to the basket and suffering an elbow injury when he hit the floor after being fouled. Hey, it’s all about learning — whether it’s for the players or coach Tom Thibodeau.

Speaking of the Bulls (and even if we were not), here is some video of Luvabulls rookie Brittany. To view, click here.

Still slightly NBA-related, singer Beyonce and Jay-Z became parents of a daughter Saturday night. He is part-owner of the Nets. The baby’s name reportedly is Ivy Blue or Blue Ivy. There has been some speculation that the name is indication of someone being a Cubs fan. Not sure about that. You’d think if that were the case, the child’s name would be Green Ivy or Bleed Cubbie Blue Ivy.
