Armstrong Will Live Strong Without Tour Titles

August 24, 2012 @ No Comments

Friday’s follies: Lance Armstrong has given up fighting with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency about charges involving his seven Tour de France titles. USADA said Thursday night (Aug. 23) it will strip him of his titles and ban him for life. Not that at age 40 he is a competitive cyclist at an elite level. Winners never quit and quitters never win? There’s doping in cycling? Oh, yeah. Almost everyone.

Jaime Edmondson reminds us the Bears play at the New York Giants on Friday.

* So those seven Armstrong Tour de France titles now go to Bartolo Colon? Oh, wait; he’s the former Chicago White Sox pitcher who this week was banned 50 games for performance-enhancing drugs.

* Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney and outfielder David DeJesus are scheduled to attend a fund-raiser for the Israel Association of Baseball on Saturday. Obviously an unorthodox approach. The event will be from about 4:30-6 p.m. at the Denim Lounge, 2039 W. Roscoe. For a $40 donation, Barney and DeJesus will sign . Fans also are encouraged to bring new or gently used baseball gear that will be sent to Israel.

* Speaking of autographs, an autographed Ferguson Jenkins jersey will be raffled off on Sept. 2 at Sports City Memorabilia in Skokie. The former Cubs pitcher also will be signing. Cost is $24 (some incscriptions extra). Persons may email Sports City Memorabilia — with name, phone number, number of tickets and number of additional inscriptions — sportscity77@comcast.net.

Don Zimmer (left -- OK, you probably figured that out) and Jaime Edmondson.

* A horse named for former Cubs manager and veteran horse player Don Zimmer won the $73,000 Del Mar Rotary Purse Thursday at Del Mar, Calif. Zimmer the horse paid $31.80, $12,80 and $5.80. It is sheer coincidence that the photo-research staff around here had a photo of Zimmer the former ballplayer. It also is sheer coincidence that also in the picture is Playboy Playmate Jaime Edmondson, long a favorite around here. They were pictured recently in a night spot in Florida.

* Speaking of night spots and such, it’s never a good idea to go drinking at some sports-related event before embarking on creating, writing, typing this stuff because sooner or later you’ll starting garbling words or place of out order them.

* Speaking of sports-related events that included imbibing, White Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis held his first Chicago Youk’s Kids event at Howl at the Moon. Comcast SportsNet Chicago’s Chuck Garfein was the emcee. It was a good time for a good cause.
