Tide Rises as Irish Fall in BCS Title Game

January 8, 2013 @ No Comments

Random thoughts while wondering how happy Ohio State’s football team (or maybe merely Buckeyes fans) might be to still have an unbeaten record while being ineligible to participate in a bowl game against — oh, I don’t know — maybe Alabama:

* In the words of the highly esteemed scribe Mike Downey that he posted on Facebook, this sums up the BCS championship game Monday (Jan. 8) between Alabama and Notre Dame: “That was an excellent football game for more than 175 seconds.” Of course, the ‘Bama supporters enjoyed it for significantly longer. As would anyone whose team wins 42-14.

* Not sure what it takes for Alabama coach Nick Saban to exhibit a modicum of joy after winning his third national title in four seasons. “Whether I look it or not, I’m happy as hell,” he said. Maybe there was Valium in the Gatorade that doused him late in the game.

* Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s girlfriend is Miss Alabama USA Katherine Webb. She was shown on camera with ESPN broadcaster Brent Musburger remarking: “You quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women. What a beautiful woman. … If you’re a youngster in Alabama, start getting the football out and throw it around the backyard with Pop.” Webb began the game with about 2,000 Twitter followers. As of slightly after 2 a.m. (Chicago time), she had more than 110,000. Not sure how many kids — or their fathers — were in the backyard throwing footballs.

* ESPN.com reports the Rose and Sugar bowls will host college football’s first national semifinals on Jan. 1, 2015, with the Cotton Bowl a “prohibitive favorite” to host the national title game on Jan. 12, 2015. Presumably that information is for Crimson Tide fans desiring to make early travel plans to Dallas.

* The Milwaukee Bucks and coach Scott Skiles reportedly no longer are an item. Assistant Jim Boylan is said to be replacing him on an interim basis. Gee, wonder who former the Chicago Bulls coach will be rooting for when the Bucks visit the United Center on Wednesday to face the Bulls. OK, which team will he be rooting against more.

* Speaking of the Bulls, they beat the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers 118-92 on Monday at the United Center. Meaning fans at the game were happier than Alabama football fans. All because the Bulls’ victory entitled the UC patrons to a free Big Mac. After all, it’s not every home game that the Bulls are able to win and score 100 or more points in the process.
