Maybe Billy Joel would like to rewrite his “Uptown Girl” to “Upton Girl” for the 2012 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover model. Kate Upton was revealed to have the honor of being on the cover during CBS’s “Late Show With David Letterman” on Monday (Feb. 13) night. She is to appear on the show Tuesday night.

Upton is 19 and from Melbourne, Fla. She made her first SI Swimsuit appearance last year.

The 2012 issue features 17 models photographed in Australia, Zambia, the Republic of Seychelles, Panama and in the in Apalachicola, Fla.

“Every single girl we shoot has the opportunity to be on the cover, and it really comes down to who has the best picture,” Daly told Reuters. “Whoever has that really special, jaw-dropping photo ends up on the cover.”

You can judge for yourself whether your jaw drops or any other physical reaction to the cover.

“You will see innovation on every Swimsuit platform this year,” said Terry McDonell, Editor Time Inc. Sports Group. “The magazine tablet app showcases the highest levels of photography through scrolling-panoramic sequences, we created a new music section on SI.com, and on your iPad and iPhone the 360-degree views of bodypaint will offer an entirely new perspective on Swimsuit.”

Upton is making her second Swimsuit appearance. Other models include 2009 cover model Bar Refaeli – photographed with Rafael Nadal, Chris Paul and Michael Phelps – and 2011 cover model Irina Shayk making her sixth Swimsuit appearance. Tony Esposito received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 24th annual Comcast SportsNet Sports Awards on Monday (Feb. 13) at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers.

Given the choice of posing with Tony Esposito or his charming wife Marilyn, Elliott Harris made the logical selection.

You can cite his 76 shutouts (74 of them with the Chicago Blackhawks). You can cite his 423 regular-season victories (418-302-148 with the Hawks). You can cite his NHL rookie record of 15 shutouts or his six all-star game appearances. All the numbers contribute to the hockey hall of fame goaltender’s list of accomplishments.

Before the evening’s festivities that benefitted the March of Dimes, Esposito obliged fans — young and old — with an autograph and/or photo. His kindness to all surely merited some sort of honor.

As his wife Marilyn looked on at the scene and chatted with your humble correspondent (what some of us like to think of as work), she noticed a boy in a wheelchair of sorts. He appeared to have been a youngster who may have been helped by the March of Dimes.

“He needs to get an autograph,” she said, nodding toward the youngster who was accompanied by his father.

A few moments later, not only did the lad have an autograph, but also some photographs — plus a private session with Tony O. It was difficult to tell who was enjoying the moment more: the youngster, his father or Tony.

After their session was over, Marilyn chatted with the youngster and his father. During their conversation, she made a discovery that caused her to once again interrupt her husband, who had returned to obliging what seemed like a never-ending line of other appreciative fans. She went over to him with the youngster alongside.

“You know,” she told Tony, “you share the same birth date.”

“No kidding,” the hockey hall of famer responded.

“The 23rd [of April],” the boy said with a smile.

And so began another conversation.

You can take away all of Esposito’s hockey accomplishments. Thanks to a few minutes during which he displayed his humble humanity and graciousness with the lad and his dad, Tony still would merit a lifetime achievement award — as would his wonderful wife.
