Bears Add RB Coach, Could Use Some RBs, Too

Offseason moves are difficult to assess. Well, until games actually begin and performance provides some information.

* One thing seems certain about the Chicago Bears’ hiring of Stan Drayton as coach of their running backs: Some folks would be happier if the person hired from Ohio State was Ezekiel Elliott, the Bearssophomore standout running back whom Drayton coached.

* Pitcher Carlos Villanueva, who had a fairly disappointing 2014 season with the Chicago Cubs, signed a minor-league deal with the St. Louis Cardinals that provides an invitation to spring training. Presumably to compete for a spot on the big-league roster and not merely to be a spectator. This is a signing that Cubs fans might like to view as addition by subtraction. For the Cardinals, it’s either a sign that they have the luxury of talented starters and could use another arm out of the bullpen or it’s a sign they’re willing to sign just about anyone to see if they can be in the starting rotation.

* The White Sox have waived third baseman/outfielder Dayan Viciedo to give him his unconditional release. The Sox probably would have preferred to give Viciedo unconditional love, but his performance on the field failed to merit that.

* Speaking of moves, the Bulls may send rookie Doug McDermott to the developmental league to gain more playing time and more confidence. If that does occur, does that mean he has a chance next season to win comeback player of the year? Or do you actually have to have been somewhere in the NBA first to qualify?

* Still speaking of moves, your humble correspondent will end today’s offering right about now because of persistent aches associated with what mysterious malady seems to have attacked this week. But before doing so, I would like to take a moment to wish my good friend Nate the Great (and you know who you are) a joyous celebration of his Bar Mitzvah. May your days — and nights — be filled with love and joy.
