Optimistic Day for Chicago Sports? Say, It Is So

January 17, 2015 @ No Comments

John Fox is the Chicago Bears’ new coach. Let the excitement begin. Which it generally does with the coronation in Bears nation whenever such vacancies are filled. Something says Bears fans will be thrilled if Fox can do for the Bears what he did with the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos: Be the losing coach in the Super Bowl.

* Speaking of Fox, some words to remember for the day that he exits as Bears coach: “I can tell you I’m really excited about the new opportunity,” he told the Denver Post. “And yet it was a real enjoyable four years in Denver. I’m not comparing, but one of the most appealing things about this job is I’ve been in places like this before, Pittsburgh and New York. Old-guard teams, old-guard ownership. Family-owned, like the Denver Broncos. Great tradition, like the Broncos. Sports towns. Great fan bases.” Not that he’s comparing. Huh?

* Speaking of feeling optimistic, sentiment apparently is running so high at Cubs Convention that the team ought to be asking the commissioner’s office any day now to authorize the Ricketts family enterprise to be able to print postseason tickets.

* Speaking of the Cubs, new manager Joe Maddon is finding out what it’s like to lead the league in fan conventions. It presumably up to him to let the fans know what it’s like to lead the league in victories.

* Speaking of imposing figures, Bulls guard Derrick Rose had some impressive stats in a 119-103 victory at Boston. He had a game-high 29 points and 10 assists. Even more impressive was a game-low number of turnovers: zero in 33 minutes. Well, some other guys had no turnovers, too. Taj Gibson had none in 39 minutes and Kirk Hinrich none in 34 minutes, as the Bulls totaled seven in the game.

* Bulls guard Jimmy Butler had 22 points. He also had six steals — one more than the entire Celtics teams.

* Speaking of Rose, he was 12-of-20 from the field, including 5-of-8 three-pointers. He was aggressive to the basket but still had no free throws. Something says he will have more Saturday night at home against the Atlanta Hawks who provide a better idea of how good the Bulls are at this point in the season (Bulls are 27-14 after 41 games; meaning they are on pace for a 54-28 season). Let the record show the Hawks are 32-8 (meaning they are on pace to be better than the Bulls and capture the best record in the Eastern Conference).
