Butler Has Career High as Bulls Get By Knicks

December 19, 2014 @ No Comments

The good news for the Chicago Bulls in Thursday’s game against the visiting New York Knicks? Derrick Rose didn’t play. Well, maybe not good news. But at least it was reported he missed the game because of illness and not injury. Whew! Better news for the Bulls was Jimmy Butler scoring a career-high 35 points in a 103-97 victory. Against a really bad team.

* Speaking of Rose (who had played 11 consecutive contests), he will miss Friday’s game at Memphis. Too bad for the folks who bought tickets to see the onetime (all right: one-year) college player at Memphis.

* Speaking of people spending money to see star players, Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony sat out the Bulls game because of knee problems. Thereby depriving a certain portion of the United Center fans to vent at him for bypassing the Bulls in free agency. And those fans would be happier to have a player sitting out because of knee problems? Boooo!

* Speaking of Butler (well, he was mentioned in the opening paragraph, Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said of his emerging star: “All I can say is thank God for Jimmy Butler. “You can’t say enough about him.” Well, pretty sure the “him” was referring to Butler and not God — although Butler has a chance to become a Bulls god if he can continue such performances (and signs a lucrative new contract for pretty much an ungodly sum).

* Still speaking of Butler, he told media after the game: “I don’t want to be a star. I just want to be a decent role player on a really good team.” Something says that by next season — with free agency looming after this season — his role will be that of a highly paid player expected to perform at a star-like level.

* Speaking of Memphis (yeah, we’re a little out of sync today; so sorry), the likelihood of the Bulls defeating the Grizzlies didn’t seem all that great with Rose (please note Bulls forward Taj Gibson missed Thursday’s game because of injury). The Grizzlies (21-4) are an NBA-best 12-1 at home this season. Then again, the Bulls (16-9) are an Eastern Conference-leading 11-4 on the road.
