Briggs’ Season, Likely Career With Bears Over

November 29, 2014 @ No Comments

The Chicago Bears placed veteran linebacker Lance Briggs on injured reserve on Friday because of a groin injury. Meaning his season is over. Also quite likely meaning his career with the Bears is over. And quite possibily meaning his NFL career is over. Then again, there are those who would say Briggs had checked out much earlier than Friday.

One of our favorites Stephy C provides some consolation for Bears fans.

* Something says Briggs, a 12-year veteran, will exit the way former teammate Brian Urlacher did. Namely ungracefully for a player who once was an impact player and departs with a sense of bitterness.

* If nothing else, you have to admit Lance Briggs has the best initials for a guy who plays linebacker.

* Speaking of initials, is there a little irony in those of Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose who has had more than his share of medical attention in his professional basketball career? Or is it merely coincidence? I have more trouble with the use of “irony” than I do with the use of an iron. And that’s saying something.

* Speaking of Rose, he had 21 points in 28 minutes in the Bulls’ 109-102 victory in Boston. Jimmy Butler led the Bulls with 22 points. Pau Gasol added 15 points and 15 rebounds, while Joakim Noah had 15 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Butler has 10 games this season with 20 or more points; he had nine such games in his first three seasons with the Bulls.

* Speaking of blocked shots, Nikola Mirotic had six blocks to go with 13 points off the bench against the Celtics. It appears Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau is becoming more comfortable with Mirotic on the court and less comfortable with fellow rookie Doug McDermott in the lineup. At some point, Thibodeau has to give meaningful minutes to McDermott, even if the rookie from Creighton might look uncomfortable (almost as uncomfortable as Thibodeau might feel) on the court.

* For what it’s worth (which probably isn’t a whole lot at this point), no team has more road victories this season than the Bulls (8-3 away from home and 10-6 overall); the Golden State Warriors (13-2 overall) are 8-1 on the road.

* It’s a good thing yesterday was Black Friday because otherwise your humble correspondent would have thought the day after a Bears game was a Monday. Pretty sure that makes today Saturday, although some of us will have to check a calendar to make sure.
