It’s a Waiting Game for Cubs, Bulls, Bears

November 20, 2014 @ No Comments

The Boston Red Sox reportedly have offered free-agent left-hander Jon Lester a six-year contract. That would be the same Jon Lester in whom the Chicago Cubs have expressed interest. Six years? Sounds like a lot to give a pitcher. Or just about any player. Any guesses which team will have won more World Series six seasons from now — with or without Lester?

* The Chicago Bulls continue their road trip Thursday night at Sacramento. Bulls guard Derrick Rose might play. Then again, he might want to give his hamstring and ankles time to heal further. At this point, he ought to do what is best for his basketball career (rather than do what’s best for his commercial endorsement possibilities). The best way for him to remain a viable endorser is to be the player Bulls fans have seldom seen healthy in the last couple of years.

* In case you haven’t heard or read (and if you haven’t, you’re probably not reading this either), Lovie Smith returns Sunday to Soldier Field as coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to play the Chicago Bears (his former employer. This is one of those games that gives Bears fans (well, at least some of them) the chance to root against both coaches.

* Speaking of coaches, if the Bears lose to the Bucs, Bears coach Marc Trestman may find his job in jeopardy (if it already isn’t). And if not in jeopardy, maybe the wheel of fortune (OK, bad game show joke there, assuming anyone recognizes it for such).

* Still speaking of coaches, former football coaches Gene Stallings and Dick Vermeil will be guests on this week’s edition of “Sports & Torts” at noon Central on Talkzone.com. The interview show co-hosted by David Spada and Elliott Harris airs on Thursday, which at last look means today (provided that yesterday was Wednesday). The highly regarded program (well, held in such high esteem in the Spada and Harris households as well as reportedly elsewhere) also will be available later Thursday (and presumably for eternity or close to it) at the Talkzone.com web site.

* Your humble correspondent would write more but for the fact that it is almost time for the sun to rise (well, assuming the sun will rise at some point today) and some of us are on our way to sleep rather than about to arise). Not to mention, some of use would prefer to see video rather than text around here any day.
