Royals a Lost Cause in World Series Opener

October 22, 2014 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: With a 7-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday night, the Kansas City Royals suffered their first defeat of the postseason after seven victories. Meaning the Chicago Cubs and White Sox have fewer 2014 postseason defeats. OK, because they failed to reach the postseason, but Cubs and Sox fans need something to be optimistic about right about now, and that was the best we could come up with.

* James Shields wasn’t anything close to “Big Game” in Game 1 for the Royals. He allowed five runs in three-plus innings. He has had a bad postseason. Meaning he would be a perfect free-agent acquisition for the Chicago Cubs — because what are the chances he would have to worry about the postseason with the Cubs?

* Speaking of the World Series, former White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy is the Giants’ Game 2 starter. Which is good news for Fox viewers won’t have to be subjected to an in-game interview with the right-hander. Whoever decided those in-game interviews are a good idea must have some sort of masochistic tendencies.

* There are those who say or think or write that if Marc Trestman (aka “The Quarterback Whisperer”) cannot improve QB Jay Cutler, then he is not the right coach for the Chicago Bears. Well, that’s one way to look at the situation. Another would be if Trestman cannot improve Cutler, then Cutler is not the right quarterback for the Bears. Think I’ll go with the latter line of thinking.

* Chicago Bulls guard/forward Jimmy Butler has sprained ligaments in his left thumb and will not practice this week or play in Friday’s exhibition game. Meaning he possibly could miss some games once the NBA season opens next week. If that’s the case, the bright (?) side would be his absence could mean a greater presence in the lineup for rookies Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic. And you probably thought Derrick Rose was going to be the major health concern for the Bulls this season. Well, he still is — if that makes you feel better (which it probably does not).

* In case anyone asks (and even if no one does), an anagram for Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner, the Game 1 winner, would be “ombudsman earring.” Or “moribund managers.” With the latter being what opposing managers tend to be after their teams face him.
