Angelo: NFL Went Easy on Domestic Violence

October 10, 2014 @ No Comments

It would seem Jerry Angelo has no desire for another job in the NFL. The former Chicago Bears general manager told USA Today the league’s teams failed to discipline players in “hundreds and hundreds” of domestic-violence cases during his 30 years in the NFL.

“Our business is to win games,” he said. “We’ve got to win games, and the commissioner’s job is to make sure the credibility of the National Football League is held in the highest esteem. But to start with that, you have to know who’s representing the shield. We got our priorities a little out of order.” OK, maybe more than a little.

* The Chicago Cubs made some offseason moves that ought to please … uh, a few people. Maybe. They named former Houston hitting coach John Mallee to replace Bill Mueller. Houston finished last in the American League with a .242 batting average. Sounds like the perfect guy for the job. The Cubs also named former player Doug Dascenzo first-base/outfield coach to replace Eric Hinske, who becomes assistant hitting coach. Start saving for your 2015 World Series tickets immediately.

* Speaking of baseball, Alejandro De Aza is on the Baltimore Orioles roster for their American League Championship Series against Kansas City. White Sox fans may feel free to take a moment to contemplate that and come to the realization — once again — that life’s not fair.

* Speaking of former White Sox players, catcher A.J. Pierzynski, who was not on the St. Louis Cardinals’ roster for the National League Division Series, is a possibility to be on their roster for the National League Championship Series against San Francisco. The Cards may go with one more position player and one less pitcher for the NLCS than they did for the NLDS. Rosters are to be turned in Friday with Game 1 of the NLCS set for Satuday. Cards manager Mike Matheny may include Pierzynski to have a third catcher, to have another left-handed bat on the bench or merely for annoyance factor.

* The Chicago Blackhawks opened their 2014-15 NHL season with a 3-2 shootout victory over the host Dallas Stars. We give this game a mention not because this site is hockeycentric (if that’s a word, which we’re fairly certain it’s not) but because our pal Stephy C sent out a photo on Twitter of her in some Hawks-related apparel. Yes, we are that bad at covering hockey. And, yes, we are that good at covering Stephy C in sports-related attire. We can live with that. Hope you can, too.

* Speaking of baseball’s postseason (trust me, we were a couple of paragraphs ago), here are some odds from the fine folks from Bovada (www.Bovada.lv, Twitter: @BovadaLV). And a reminder that these numbers are strictly entertainment purposes (unless, of course, you win big and feel like making a donation to the ElliottHarris.com foundation, which doesn’t really exist but we will consider founding one if you have a spare six-figure contribution to make — and that six figures can include two to the right of the decimal point; no need to be greedy):
