Daft About NFL Draft: 2015 Event to Chicago

October 3, 2014 @ No Comments

Chicago will be host to the 2015 NFL draft. Oh, joy! What more could Bears fans want? Other than perhaps reaching the postseason. Winning a Super Bowl this century. Stuff like that. Something says the NFL draft presence in Chicago will have to suffice as far as winning anything league-wide.

* If Thursday night’s Minnesota-Green Bay football game tells us anything, it is that the Bears will not finish last in the NFC North. Well, not as long as Christian Ponder is the quarterback. Then again, most teams in the NFC North — or anywhere — would be hard-pressed to prevail with a third-string QB.

* The one thing the Vikings-Packers game did provide was an alternative to the Detroit-Baltimore baseball postseason game. The Orioles scored eight runs in the eighth inning on their way to a 12-3 Game 1 victory over the visiting Tigers. Meaning the football game was a reasonable channel to switch too. Except that the Packers were quickly up a touchdown, then two. It was enough to make a sane person switch back to baseball. And I did, too.

* If you wanted a close game, you had to stay up for the Kansas City Royals-Los Angeles Angels playoff game. And if you wanted the final result, you had to stay up past midnight (Central time). Thankfully, some of us don’t have to be up early in the morning. The Royals prevailed 3-2 in 11 innings in their series opener.

* Speaking of the Packers (as we were a graph or so ago), Julius Peppers had a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 42-10 victory. Peppers, who signed this season with Green Bay as a free agent after the Bears no longer wanted him, became the first NFL player with 100 sacks and 10 interceptions. Not that the Bears defense would be substantially better with him.

* For the second consecutive contest, the Packers lost — in time of possession, not the game itself. For those who have blocked out the Packers’ decisive victory Sunday against the Bears at Soldier Field. On the bright (?) side for Bears fans, if the Packers continue to play like this, the Green Bay defensive unit ought to be fatigued by the time the two teams meet again Nov. 9 at Lambeau Field. Also on the bright side, if the Bears are in postseason contention, they play the Vikings in the season finale Dec. 28. Well, they’ll host meet Minnesota even if they aren’t in contention.

* As the faithful readers of this site (and even the philanderers of this site) know, we don’t do a lot of hockey around here. The Blackhawks play their final preseason game Friday night at New York against the Rangers. So in honor of the exhibition season about to end because we have a photo of Alexis Michelle in Hawks attire, consider this the first hockey coverage of the 2014-15 season. Alexis also will be competing. No, not hockey. In the 2014 NPC Continental USA Bodybuilding and Figure Championships on Saturday in Ottawa, Ill. Ashley is a bikini competitor. Good luck to all involved.
