Soler Homers Power Cubs; Tigers Thump White Sox

August 30, 2014 @ No Comments

The Chicago Cubs may be the best last-place team in baseball! They defeated the host St. Louis Cardinals 7-2 Friday night with Jorge Soler hitting two home runs. Javier Baez had a two-run double that broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning. Arismendy Alcantara added a home run in the ninth. Luis Valbuena had a homer for the first Cubs run. Games like this give Cubs fans hope for 2015 and beyond. They also make the job of the Cubs ticket-sales department much easier for next season.

* While you are reading this, the Cubs are petitioning commissioner Bud Selig to have only the games beginning with Friday’s count in the standings. If the Cubs (60-74) play .600 ball the rest of the season (they are 6-4 in their last 10), they will finish 77-85. Of course, if they win the rest of their games (they are 1-0 in their last 1), they will finish 88-74. Hey, if you’re going to dream, might as well dream big. Right, Cubs fans?

* Speaking of Soler, he has three home runs in his first three games. He joins Baez in that regard. Just guessing that Soler’s batting average won’t drop below .200 the way Baez’s did. Also just guessing Soler won’t be able to sustain his .636 batting average.

* Speaking of last-place teams, the Chicago White Sox are not there yet. Pretty much because the Minnesota Twins occupy that spot in the American League Central. With their 7-1 loss to the visiting Detroit Tigers, the Sox (60-74) have the same record as the Cubs. This is going to be a real fight to the finish, folks.

* If it’s any consolation to Sox fans (and the guess here is that it is not), the Sox held Miguel Cabrera to an 0-for-5 night vs. them. Please pay no attention to the rest of the Tigers lineup with all the other starters having at least one hit.
