Bears’ Loss in Seattle Does Not Equal Loss of Sleep

August 23, 2014 @ No Comments

The bright side to the Chicago Bears’ 34-6 loss to the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks is the game was over so quickly that only friends and family of the players needed to stay up late to watch most of the game.

* Someone please tell me how the third exhibition game is the one that provides a glimpse into what the upcoming season might look like. On second thought, please don’t.

* The White Sox’ 4-3 loss to the host New York Yankees featured a three-run home run by rookie Jose Abreu. Meaning he has 33 homers and 93 runs batted in in 440 at-bats. Meaning the Sox slugger is averaging a home run every 13.3 at-bats.

* Cubs second baseman Javier Baez hit a home run in the team’s 4-1 victory vs. the Baltimore Orioles at Wrigley Field. It was his sixth homer. He also struck out once. It was his 31st in 71 at-bats. Meaning he is averaging a home run every 11.8 at-bats.

* By going seven innings and allowing one run against his former teammates, Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta lowered his earned-run average to 2.53. He also took over the team lead in quality starts with 13, one more than Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel (traded last month to Oakland).

* The Chicago Sky defeated the host/top-seeded Atlanta Dream 80-77 for the first postseason victory in Sky history. OK, all of three games in franchise postseason history. Elena Delle Donne led the Sky with 21 points in 33 minutes as a starter. The other Sky starters also scored in double digits: Epiphanny Prince 14, Courtney Vandersloot 13 and Sylvia Fowles and Tamera Young 12 each. Meaning the fourth-seeded Sky is one victory from advancing to the WNBA’s Eastern Conference finals. With the next game Sunday at home for the Sky.

* Speaking of the Sky, the research department around here is trying to figure out whether the Sky led the league in starter-games-missed this season. Delle Donne (Lyme disease) and Vandersloot (knee sprain) each missed 17 and Fowles (hip surgery) missed 14. Meaning the players should be reasonably well-rested, while Atlanta is well-tested and on the verge of being the 2014 version of the Sky — a team that won the Eastern Conference regular-season title and was eliminated in two games in the postseason.
