Darwinism: Cubs Opt to Survive Without Barney

July 23, 2014 @ No Comments

Midweek musings: The Chicago Cubs are on the move. In terms of player personnel rather than any upward mobility in the National League Central standings. Presumably, that’s some consolation for long-suffering Cubs fans (you mean there’s another breed of those?).

* The Cubs designated former Gold Glove second baseman Darwin Barney for assignment. Which means his career with the Cubs likely is over. His assignment should be to regain some hitting prowess. Even without it, there are enough big-league teams that need a second baseman that he likely will land with another big-league team.

* The Mike Olt era might be over for the Cubs. Or whatever you want to call the third baseman’s time on the roster this season. He was optioned to Class AAA Iowa after Tuesday’s victory in which he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. He was batting .139 (26-for-187) with 12 home runs. He struck out 84 times. For all those out there without a calculator, that’s striking out 45 percent of the time. For all those out there without a clue, that’s a lot.

* Moving up the minor-league food chain are outfielders Jorge Soler and Albert Almora. Soler is moving on up to Class AAA Iowa, while Almora is being elevated to Class AA. This tends to be the sort of thing that excites Cubs fans. Which speaks to the organization’s commitment to winning at some point in the future. Just as Olt’s prolonged presence on the big-league team speaks to the organization’s commitment to not winning this season.

* Speaking of winning, the Cubs did defeat the visitng San Diego Padres, as first baseman Anthony Rizzo hit two home runs. His 25 homers lead the National League. Which is about as close as the Cubs are going to be in leading the NL this season.

* The White Sox lost to the visiting Kansas City Royals 7-1. And if your humble correspondent can come up with something insightful to say about that you’ll be the first to know. Until then … nothing.
