Spurs Humble Heat, Claim NBA Crown

June 16, 2014 @ No Comments

Monday meanderings: The San Antonio Spurs defeated the visiting Miami Heat 104-87 Sunday night to capture the best-of-seven NBA finals in five games. Meaning Spurs forward Tim Duncan has five championships. Michael Jordan has six. So if Duncan wins another one or more, he will be as good as — or better than — Jordan? No. Because there is more to greatness than championship rings, right? Which is why the bashing of Heat star LeBron James is — in a word — silly. Or another word: stupid.

* While a portion of the NBA-centric universe was gleeful about the Heat’s failure, the reality is Miami will make adjustments. And it still has James (unless he becomes a free agent), the best player on the planet.

* A reminder to Bulls fans or fans of other teams that James does not play for: Bashing James does not make your team any better than it was in 2013-14.

* So where does all this leave the Chicago Bulls? Fantasizing Derrick Rose returns healthy. And they acquire some top-flight talent that can provide points (and play a little defense). And everything else falling into place. Sounds realistic, no? In a word: not really (OK, that’s two words, but some of us are mathematically challenged).

* Speaking of players who can score, Carmelo Anthony — who soon will decide whether to stay with the New York Knicks or explore free-agency — says the Bulls are a team that he might entertain offers to play for. In part because the Bulls are a reasonably good team that could use a scorer and in part because free agents need multiple teams to drive up the price of a new contract.

* Speaking of numbers (which we were a couple of paragraphs ago), the Cubs defeated the host Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 for their first series victory on the road this season. Well, now that that’s taken care, maybe the team’s front office will decide to print postseason tickets (leaving the year blank, of course).

* Speaking of winning road series, the Kansas City Royals beat the White Sox 6-3 to sweep the three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field. On the bright (?) side, the Sox bullpen did pitch three innings of scoreless relief Sunday. Yes, we are at the point where any glimmer of goodness helps. OK, we have been for a while (but don’t tell the diehard Sox fans, please).

* Speaking of Sox fans, if it’s any consolation to them (and the guess here is that it possibly could be), the Sox have scored more runs (304) than the American League Central-leading Detroit Tigers (292). Then again, the Sox have yielded the most runs in the AL (335).
