UConn Wins Men’s Title, Looks to Add Women’s

Random thoughts (or as close as we come to such things around here) while wondering whether Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw dislikes Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma more than he dislikes her.

* Speaking of the aforementioned teams, both are unbeaten going into Tuesday night’s NCAA title game. Which should make for as compelling a women’s college contest as there could be. You can bet the game will have a smaller viewership (and in no small part because there is far less bet — and that includes your basic office bracket, etc. — on the women than on the men.

* Speaking of the men’s game, Connecticut’s 60-54 victory over Kentucky for the national championship means several of the best departing Wildcats players will have gone their entire Kentucky careers — all one year of it — without winning a title.

* The Bulls have re-signed Ronnie Brewer for the rest of the season. And postseason. Meaning maybe coach Tom Thibodeau will cut down the minutes he plays Jimmy Butler. OK, realistically (perhaps?), it means Thibodeau has someone to put in the game if Butler has foul trouble.

* The best thing about the White Sox game at Colorado … OK, there was no best thing from a Sox perspective. Something says when the opposing pitcher (in this case Jordan Lyles) has more hits than any Sox player and more runs batted in than the Sox, the Sox are going to have a difficult time winning. Such was the case in the Rockies’ 8-1 victory. On the bright (?) side, Sox catcher Tyler Flowers walked twice (his first of the season) and improved his on-base percentage to a team-high .524. Hey, it’s the best we can do on short notice.

* Ex-Cub of the day: Manager Joe Girardi enjoyed a 4-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the Yankees’ home opener.

* Ex Cub and Sox of the day: Tony LaRussa enjoyed a ride around Busch Stadium in a convertible as part of the pregame ceremonies in the St. Louis Cardinals’ home opener.
