Minor Adjustments for Cubs Hopefuls

March 13, 2014 @ No Comments

Thursday thoughts (or what passes for those things around here): For those who stayed up late enough, the Chicago Cubs lost in 10 innings to the Seattle Mariners 8-7 in a Cactus League contest Wednesday. Well, even if you didn’t stay up til 12:55 a.m. Chicago time, they still lost. Javier Baez hit a long home run for the Cubs, who earlier in the day sent prospects Albert Almora, Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler and six others to their minor-league camp. So Baez improved his chances to being with the Cubs longer? Yes, but only for spring training. He will be back in the minors for the start of the 2014 season. But that will improve the organization’s minor-league rating (if that’s any consolation — and guessing that it isn’t to many Cubs faithful).

* Josh McCown, who quarterbacked the Chicago Bears while starter Jay Cutler was injured last season, reportedly has signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Other than more money than the Bears might have offered and the chance to compete for a starting job, it would have made sense for him to stay with the Bears. No? Sure.

* OK, so it seems former Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson is going to be the basketball boss of the New York Knicks, a team that he once played for. Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony said Jackson’s presence will not affect his impending free agency. Whatever that is supposed to mean. There would be a certain irony if Jackson’s presence with the Knicks led to Athony’s departure from the team and ending up with the Bulls.

* If today is Thursday (which seems likely because yesterday was Wednesday — provided that you are reading this on March 13, 2014, or a subsequent Thursday), then it is time for the weekly edition of “Sports & Torts” with co-hosts David Spada and Elliott Harris at noon Central time on Talkzone.com. The guests for the March 13 show are Playboy Playmate Britt Linn and former Kentucky basketball coach Joe B. Hall. For those unable to tune in to the program (or for those who would like to enjoy an encore performance), it will be available via podcast later in the day at the Talkzone.com web site.

* In case I’m tempted ever again, will someone remind me it’s not a good idea to try to get by on three hours’ sleep? Especially if shoveling heavy snow is part of the day’s endeavors. If anyone is interested (and even if they are not), I hope to be sleeping away a significant part of Thursday. Well, other than the “Sports & Torts” portion.
